"I want to report that I think I have solved a major problem in theoretical physics." With those words the eminent physicist Stephen Hawking opened a lecture at a scientific conference in Dublin last week which, in true Hawking style, overturned decades of scientific thinking, surprised many of his peers and left everyone else scratching their heads. Speaking to an audience of more than 600 physicists and dozens of the world's media, Hawking said he now believed that black holes, the mysterious massive vortexes formed from collapsed stars, do not destroy everything that is sucked into them. Instead an abstract quantity called "information", which describes the core characteristics of every type of particle in the universe, leaks from the black hole over time. The announcement marks a U-turn from Hawking, who had argued that anything swallowed by a black hole was hidden for ever from the outside universe. THE first-ever detailed photo of the black hole at the heart of our galaxy has been revealed. The black hole is called Sagittarius A* and it has never been photographed until now. The glowing orb you're seeing is actually plasma around the edge of the black hole. Scientists just revealed the impressive image at a press conference today. The National Science Foundation called the event "groundbreaking". The image was taken by the Event Horizon Telescope project. Commenters in a popular internet forum supported a man who said in a now-viral post that he wants to include his "Black family" in his family wedding photos, despite his parents' wishes. Posting in Reddit 's "Am I The A**hole" (AITA) forum under a throwaway account, the man—who's white—explained that he briefly lived with his best friend's family, otherwise known as his "Black family," as a teenager after his parents kicked him out. The post has garnered more than 11,000 upvotes and over 700 comments from Redditors who argued that his best friend's family should be included in his wedding photos, considering they were the ones who took him in after his biological family cast him out. Scientists are investigating a mysterious "solar hedgehog" seen on the surface of the Sun. The European Space Agency (ESA) has revealed a trove of images captured by its Solar Orbiter . NASA and the UK Space Agency also contributed to the project. After passing within the orbit of Mercury, the probe was able to capture images of the solar hedgehog, a solar flare, the Sun's south pole, the Sun's magnetic activity and a full view of the Sun. David Berghmans, from the Royal Observatory of Belgium, described the images of the lower layers of the Sun's atmosphere as "really breathtaking". Air Force officials are investigating allegations that a Black airman is not being considered for a higher position because the military branch is "looking for somebody of white complexion." The widely shared text exchange was first posted anonymously on the Facebook page Air Force amn/snco/nco on May 4. Though many commenters claimed the conversation was fake, military officials are taking the post seriously. Task & Purpose, an online military publication, identified the sender of the text as a white technical sergeant and the recipient as a Black senior airman, both serving in the 56th Equipment Maintenance Squadron in Arizona. "We won't be sending your name up for [redacted] at the squadron," the white technical sergeant allegedly said. When the senior airman asked why he was being passed up for the position, the sergeant allegedly said it was in part because of his race. The nail-biting and deliciously unsettling sci-fi series Black Mirror will return to Netflix for an eagerly-anticipated sixth season.
