Johanna Konta battled back from a set down to sink Sloane Stephens and reach the last 16 at Wimbledon. The British number one appeared on the brink of defeat with former US Open champion Stephens, seeded nine, dictating the match and errors creeping into Konta’s game. But Konta managed to stop the bleeding and haul herself level before a composed final set wrapped up a 3-6 6-4 6-1 victory and extended her 100 per cent record against Stephens to four matches. The most recent of those wins was a 6-1 6-4 pummelling at the French Open in May, where Stephens was overrun by Konta’s energy and intensity. It seemed she had learned a lesson from that painful defeat, with the American soaking up the power from Konta and moving her all around the court. Konta’s serve has improved immensely since last year, so much so that she had not been broken all week. That changed in the eighth game of the first set, Stephens mixing things up with lobs, drops and powerful groundstrokes to … [Read more...] about Konta fights back to beat Stephens at Wimbledon

A quadcopter drone appears on the radar screen and makes a beeline for the control tower at Paris' Le Bourget airport. Is this the latest in a string of drone sightings at airports that has forced costly shutdowns and affected tens of thousands of passengers? No -- it's a simulation, and the drone is quickly stopped by a defence system being trialled at the Paris Air Show. "The jamming zone will make it turn back where it came from," says Egidio Cau, head of anti-drone systems at CS Communication Systemes as he runs the test at the company's stand for the show at Le Bourget. Drones are more and more frequently causing havoc at airports around the world, with just the latest coming on Wednesday when drone sightings forced Singapore's main airport to temporarily close, with dozens of flights delayed. It joined a lengthening list of airports suffering serious disruption due to uninvited visits by unmanned aerial devices. London's Gatwick was paralysed for 36 hours in December following … [Read more...] about Game of drones: Airports rally firms to battle threat from above
Painters and decorators, lawyers and account managers are being trained to the rigorous standards met by their professional soldier comrades, ready to stand shoulder to shoulder in the world’s trouble hotspots. The Army’s 2020 strategy calls for 82,000 trained regular personnel and 30,000 trained reserves – an army consisting of 112,000 personnel. LeicestershireLive reporter Alan Thompson and photographer/videographer Andy Baker have spent five months watching the reserves of Leicester-based 2 Company, the 3rd Battalion, Royal Anglian Regiment in training for the day they hope will never come, but have to be prepared for. A large transport shed in the corner the Ulverscroft Road Army Reserve Centre doubles as a compound laden with potential dangers for troops carrying out a search. Wearing helmet-mounted night vision “monoculars” (single lens) which turn night into day, an eight-man section tentatively enters the plywood structure – built with … [Read more...] about The part time soldiers training to fight alongside regulars

Days after saying he hoped the U.S. and Iran would not go to war, President Donald Trump threatened Iran with destruction if it seeks a fight. Trump issued the warning after a rocket landed less than a mile from the U.S. Embassy on Sunday in Baghdad's Green Zone, further stoking tensions in the region. "If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran. Never threaten the United States again," Trump said in a tweet. Tensions between Washington and Tehran have been on the rise as the United States has deployed a carrier group and B-52 bombers to the Gulf over what it termed Iranian "threats." Iran's foreign minister downplayed the prospect of a new war in the region on Saturday, saying Tehran opposed it and no party was under the "illusion" the Islamic republic could be confronted. "We are certain... there will not be a war since neither we want a war nor does anyone have the illusion they can confront Iran in the region," Mohammad Javad Zarif told state-run news agency IRNA … [Read more...] about Trump threatens ‘official end of Iran’ if it fights US
