A mum and her daughter died of Covid after 11 family members tested positive following a Christmas gathering. Paramjeet Bains, 43, died on January 5 when she suffered a major seizure just one day after being admitted to the intensive care unit at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton. According to brother and son Indy Bains, 11 members of his family caught the virus after they met on Christmas Day, the BBC reports. Mr Bains, 40, said the family was initially reluctant to gather but decided to spend a few hours together as his sister, who had learning disabilities, had suffered during isolation. The family "played safe", adhering to the government's three household rule. Days later they all tested positive to Covid-19. How ‘sticky bombs’ could impact Kashmir insurgency
Indian security forces have seized dozens of "sticky bombs" during raids in India-administered Kashmir in recent months. "These bombs are a threat to security forces. We have issued orders to the security forces to remain alert," Rajesh Sharma, a senior police official in Samba district, told DW. Sticky bombs, or Magnet-attached Improvised Explosive Devices (MIEDs), can be attached to a vehicle and detonated remotely. Muslim insurgents have been fighting Indian forces in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir — a region of 12 million people, about 70% of whom are Muslim — since 1989. Two of their three wars that India and Pakistan have fought since their independence in 1947, have been over Kashmir — which both claim in full, but rule in part. … [Read more...] about How ‘sticky bombs’ could impact Kashmir insurgency

Scientists from Brazil and the UK estimate the variant, known as P1, is 1.4 to 2.2 times more transmissible than previous versions of coronavirus circulating in Manaus, the Amazon city where it originated. It is also able to evade between 25% and 61% of protective immunity from previous infection, according researchers at Imperial College London and the University of Sao Paulo.
