Nadhim Zahawi’s fight for tax cuts in the face of brutal economics
Less than 12 hours after being appointed Chancellor, Nadhim Zahawi was out to offer mutinous Tory MPs the red meat of sweeping tax cuts. His morning media round was dubbed potentially the most expensive in history. By lunchtime he had suffered his first resignation from the Treasury, City minister John Glen, and by late-afternoon he was part of the cabal telling Boris Johnson to go. Even if his tenure in Number 11 is brief, the Treasury changeover sets the scene for the internal battle over how the Tory party should tackle taxes. Zahawi said he is “ determined to do more” on tax cuts and promised to review Rishi Sunak’s plans to raise billions of pounds from a huge hike in corporation tax. “Nothing is off the table,” the former Education Secretary said as he vowed to get “growth going again”. Chris Sanger, EY's head of tax policy, says Sunak’s exit “could be a turning point” given he “held the line against tax reductions in the face of increasing inflation”. When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?
The most famous story about modern presidential campaigning now has a quaint old-world tone. It’s about the showdown between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy in the first debate of their 1960 campaign, which was also the very first nationally televised general-election debate in the United States. The story is that Kennedy looked great, which is true, and Nixon looked terrible, which is also true—and that this visual difference had an unexpected electoral effect. As Theodore H. White described it in his hugely influential book The Making of the President 1960 , which has set the model for campaign coverage ever since, “sample surveys” after the debate found that people who had only heard Kennedy and Nixon talking, over the radio, thought that the debate had been a tie. But those who saw the two men on television were much more likely to think that Kennedy—handsome, tanned, non-sweaty, poised—had won. Historians who have followed up on this story haven’t found data to back … [Read more...] about When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?

Boris says it wouldn’t be ‘responsible’ for him to leave Number 10
Boris Johnson has said leaving Number 10 would not be the ‘responsible’ thing to do, given the challenges facing the country. The prime minister has been badly wounded by a wave of resignations from senior colleagues and junior ministers calling for him to step down. Reports suggest a delegation of Cabinet ministers – said to include Grant Shapps and Brandon Lewis – are heading to Downing Street to tell him he should quit . Michael Gove is thought to have already done so . Mr Johnson appeared before the Liaison Committee on Thursday, during which he was confronted with one of his own past quotes about leaders who cling to power long after they have lost all authority. Labour MP Darren Jones challenged the PM: ‘”When a regime has been in power for too long, when it has fatally exhausted the patience of the people, and when oblivion finally beckons – I am afraid that across the world you can rely on the leaders of that regime to act solely in the interests of … [Read more...] about Boris says it wouldn’t be ‘responsible’ for him to leave Number 10
What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
“D uck and cover!” a mechanized voice screamed. The ground shook and the window rattled. I rolled from my bed to the floor of my trailer and felt for the armor I’d forgotten in my office. I lay there and sweated and swore. The voice from the loudspeaker urged me to get away from the windows. I was inside a tin can. I crawled to the door. My hand was on the knob when I realized I was naked. The next impact knocked the air conditioner to the floor. I grabbed a light-blue cotton robe and bolted. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. I raced along a row of sandbags, one hand holding the robe closed. The duck-and-cover bunkers were 100 feet away. Another series of explosions, and I hit the rocks. I was lying there, panting, when I saw a bright-yellow bunker tucked behind a row of sandbags and palm trees. I was up, running, full out. My robe fell open and flew out behind me. Another hit. I was 20 feet away. Ten. Five. I crashed into the … [Read more...] about What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
