Saudi troops have been deployed to the Yemeni island of Socotra following tensions over the United Arab Emirates' presence there, the Saudi-led coalition fighting rebels in Yemen said Sunday. "Saudi forces have arrived on the island of Socotra... to train and support Yemeni forces," the coalition announced through Saudi's state-owned Al-Ekhbariya channel. The deployment was said to have been coordinated with the Yemeni government. The United Arab Emirates is a key pillar of the Saudi-led coalition battling Huthi rebels in support of the Yemeni government, but has recently distanced itself from President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi. A government source confirmed to AFP that Emirati soldiers were deployed to Socotra earlier this month without the approval of Hadi's government, which controls the Arabian Sea island. The presence of UAE troops angered Socotra residents, who asserted there were no rebels on the island, the source said. Socotra had been spared involvement in the Yemeni conflict, … [Read more...] about Saudi troops arrive on Yemen’s Socotra after UAE tensions
Saudi troops have arrived on the Yemeni island of Socotra, the AP news agency reported Sunday, citing a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition Turki al-Malki. According to him, Saudi forces are set to conduct joint training drills with the UAE and Yemeni forces, in coordination with the Yemeni government. The island of Socotra, listed by UNESCO as a world natural heritage site, has become the core of the dispute between Yemen and the Saudi-allied United Arab Emirates, which reportedly deployed their forces in the area earlier this the month. The UK Independent published the first in an exclusive series of reports last week about the Indian Ocean Island that its journalists recently travelled to, revealing that the UAE was for all intents and purposes in full control of this territory despite there never having been any presence of the Houthi rebels here. This prompted the Yemeni Prime Minister to take to Facebook to condemn what he called the "continuing disagreement" and declare that "correcting this is everyone's responsibility". The UAE's official response is that its military presence is being "distorted" by what it described as "malicious campaigns led by the Muslim Brotherhood", though unnamed sources told the al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper that Yemen was considering asking the UN Security Council to intervene in restoring Sanaa's sovereignty over the island. This surprising development comes as the UAE and its Saudi coalition ally are … [Read more...] about Yemen’s Socotra: The UAE’s “Eighth Emirate”?
World Bulletin / News Desk A diphtheria outbreak has killed 91 people in war-torn Yemen since late October, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Saturday. In a statement, the UN agency said some 1,725 suspected cases of diphtheria have been registered in 20 of Yemen’s 23 provinces. It listed Ibb and al-Hodeidah provinces in central and western Yemen as the hardest-hit by the disease. Diphtheria spreads as easily as the common cold through sneezing, coughing or even talking, according to health officials. Yemen has been racked by violence since 2014, when Houthi rebels overran much of the country. The conflict escalated in 2015 when Saudi Arabia and its allies launched a devastating air campaign aimed at rolling back Houthi gains. The ongoing violence has devastated basic services, including water and sanitation systems, prompting the UN to describe the situation in Yemen as one of “the world’s worst humanitarian disasters in modern times." Legal … [Read more...] about Diphtheria outbreak kills 91 in Yemen
LONDON/ADEN – Reuters An explosion has damaged a Turkish vessel carrying wheat to Yemen’s Houthi-controlled port of Saleef, with varying accounts attributing the incident on May10 to an unexplained blast aboard the ship or a possible missile strike. A naval ship of a Saudi-led military coalition received a call from the captain of the vessel, the Ince Inebolu, who reported an opening had appeared in the middle of the ship on the left side, a spokesman for the alliance said. “Coalition forces conducted a survey of the incident and visited the ship and found an explosion from the inside to the outside,” the spokesman said in a statement. The captain said he did not know the cause of the damage, the spokesman said. The coalition later towed the ship to the port of Jizan in Saudi Arabia. A shipping source said separately it was possible the damage was either caused by overheating of parts of the ship or a missile. A separate source connected with the shipment said … [Read more...] about Explosion damages Turkish vessel carrying wheat to Yemen
