Just a few days before the football World Cup kicked off, I saw a workman hurriedly repainting the final burgundy brushstrokes of the letters "built in Lenin's honor" under the name of a metro station in the center of the city. It was part of the final push to spruce up the capital for the arrival of foreign football fans. In some of Russia's host cities, there were reports of banners being hung and large fences being built to cover crumbling buildings. In Samara, people complained that traditional wooden houses were being given a makeover that left their windows painted shut but the back of their facades untouched. But despite the criticism and now that the World Cup is underway, changes seem to have gone deeper. Many of the tacit rules of conduct in the city are being broken. The smiles of fans seem to be proving infectious in Moscow 1. Say cheese! Since the World Cup began, smiling is no longer frowned upon in Moscow. Usually, a smile is simply not a cultural … [Read more...] about 5 ways the football World Cup has transformed Moscow – for now

Clairvoyant cat Achilles to predict World Cup winners at Russia 2018
Achilles, the supposedly psychic cat, will turn his talents to the beautiful game's most prestigious event, the World Cup, after he predicted results during last year's Confederations Cup. The white feline, who lives in St. Petersburg's Hermitage museum, will make his predictions by choosing between two bowls of food, each bearing a team flag. With the tournament scheduled to start on June 14, Achilles has been seen wearing a red soccer jersey and studying the competing teams and match schedules. He is the latest in a long line of animals conscripted into the sports results prediction business. Eight years ago his World Cup predecessor Paul the Octopus became a worldwide phenomenon after accurately predicting the winners of all of Germany's matches at the 2010 World Cup. Paul the Octopus accurately predicted the outcome of all of Germany's matches in 2010 Paul, who has since passed away, communicated his insights by choosing between two glass … [Read more...] about Clairvoyant cat Achilles to predict World Cup winners at Russia 2018
World Cup 2018: Foreign fans flood into Moscow as Russia gets the party started
Spanish was the prevailing language on Nikolskaya street as yellow-clad Colombians mingled with Mexican fans in green and white sombreros, while Argentina fans brandished flags bearing Diego Maradona's face. It comes as no surprise. FIFA have confirmed that over 2.5 million tickets have been sold for the tournament and nations from the Americas make up over half of the top ten countries at the World Cup when ranked by ticket sales. Argentina supporters captured the world's attention in Brazil four years ago with their catchy chant asking hosts, neighbors and rivals Brazil "how it felt to have Daddy in their home?" and proclaiming that "Maradona is better than Pele." And over 54,000 will be travelling to Russia. Another 60,000 tickets have been sold to Mexico, the newly-announced co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup. Many are already in Moscow ahead of their team's opener against world champions Germany on Sunday. About 65,000 have gone to Colombia while favorites Brazil will be backed by … [Read more...] about World Cup 2018: Foreign fans flood into Moscow as Russia gets the party started
Qatar World Cup: Fans could go to three games in a day as tournament held in country smaller than Yorkshire
IT will be like holding a World Cup inside the M25. For all eight air-conditioned stadiums rising from the Qatari sands are within 31 miles of the chrome and glass skyscrapers in capital Doha’s centre. The shortest journey between stadiums in Qatar is just over three miles — closer than north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham. Nasser Al Khater, the assistant secretary general at the supreme committee for delivery and legacy, told SunSport: “If fans are really hardcore and they make a run for it, they could potentially see three group games in a day.” In Russia, visiting the most distant stadiums — Kaliningrad and Yekaterinburg — meant a 1,550-mile flight. The longest distance between the Gulf state’s 2022 World Cup arenas is just 35 miles. The compact nature of 2022 — Qatar is smaller than Yorkshire — may offer solace for fans of British and Irish international teams still coming to terms with the idea of a winter World Cup in the … [Read more...] about Qatar World Cup: Fans could go to three games in a day as tournament held in country smaller than Yorkshire
Watch the first goal of 2022 World Cup qualifying scored by Mongolia against Brunei
IT may be more than three years away but the first goal of World Cup 2022 qualifying has already been scored. And what a goal it was. Nine minutes into their first-leg match against Brunei, Mongolia won a free-kick about 25 yards from goal. Up stepped captain Norjmoogiin Tsedenbal, a midfielder who plays for Ulaanbaastar City, to whip home a brilliant left-footed effort into the far corner. Hornets keeper Haimie Anak Nyaring was left stranded and could only pick the ball out of the back of the net. Naranbold Nyam-Osor added a second for Mongolia, as the Blue Wolves recorded a 2-0 win over Brunei. The two sides will head to Bandar Seri Begawan for the second leg next Tuesday.
