Royal Mail workers have announced a 48-hour strike taking place on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1. It marks the start of 19 walk outs in total, all taking place over the course of October and November in deteriorating and long-running disputes over pay. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) confirmed the strikes earlier this year, after they were pushed back due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8. It is a worry to the UK public, with the walk outs ongoing in the run up to the Christmas period. It leaves many wondering whether or not the Post Office is open all together, as even though the two organisations are separate, they are directly tied to one-another. Vladimir Putin today announced his annexation of four provinces of Ukraine —four provinces that he does not fully control, that did not vote to join Russia, that have been the site of mass murder and mass deportation since Russia invaded Ukraine in February. With this statement, the Russian president is also declaring war. But this is not merely a war on Ukraine. Putin’s war—Russia’s war—is also a war on a particular idea of world order, and of international law, an idea upheld not just by Europeans and North Americans, but by most of the rest of the world, indeed by the United Nations itself. One core principle of this world order is that larger countries should not be able to grab parts of smaller countries, that mass slaughter of whole populations is unacceptable, that borders have international significance and cannot be changed through violence or on one dictator’s whim. Putin already challenged this idea in 2014, when he annexed Crimea. At the time he also held a sham … [Read more...] about Putin’s Newest Annexation Is Dire for Russia Too
When the news of 14-year-old Molly Russell's death came to light in 2019, it seemed to mark a watershed for social media. The case was so shocking, so haunting, that it seemed impossible to imagine social media sites could possibly stay the same. Even the social media companies were jolted into action. As public outrage grew, Instagram - where, in the months before her death, Molly "liked" videos of people falling off buildings or jumping in front of trains, presented in a way that glamourised suicide - changed its guidance to ban "graphic" suicide and self-harm content. A guide to the books and movies that can help you understand one of the Supreme Court's most important, and most neglected, rulings: the one that secured the right to counsel for indigent defendants. The accompanying piece about the legacy of Gideon v. Wainwright is long -- probably longer than my dear editors would have liked -- but in many important ways it is not long enough. There is a great deal of relevant, interesting material worthy of a closer look that I did not include in my take on the 50th anniversary of the right to counsel. Here are some resources you should check out if you want to know more about this vital topic: 1. You simply have to start with Gideon's Trumpet , published in 1964 by Anthony Lewis, then and for many years afterward the New York Times ' Supreme Court reporter. The simple book is Lewis' masterwork, in my opinion, and one of the finest works about American law ever written. You can read it in less than a day; and you should; and if you do, … [Read more...] about So You Want to Learn More About the Gideon Case?

FASHION brands may be becoming more size-inclusive but this can sometimes be lacking, especially when it comes to celebrity or influencer collaborations. With Boohoo recently launching their summer collection in collaboration with actress Megan Fox, fashionistas were quick to wonder just how inclusive this range will be, and if it lives up to the hype. One fashion youtuber, Andrea Buller , ordered a haul of the collection to test just how well these clothes would fit someone with a midsize body. The first item she tried on was the premium mirror-disc mini dress , which she purchased for $100. The dress is currently on sale in the UK with 15% off at £59.50. The dress only comes in a small, medium, or large, with Andrea purchasing the large. “Please keep in mind, this goes for $100,” quips Andrea, before showing that the dress can’t even get over bust.
