The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a country that is never far off the headlines. Sadly, there has scarcely been any positive news about the country. Its tumultuous history goes back to the 1870s when King Leopold II of Belgium orchestrated his private venture to colonize the Congo. As a young person growing up, I heard harrowing tales of how from 1885, following Leopold's announcement of the establishment of the Congo Free State, to the 1960s, over 15 million Congolese were brutally murdered. The hope that all this would end with independence was shattered with the killing in 1961 of the DRC's first prime minister, Patrice Lumumba . The country has been in a perpetually fragile state ever since. The murder of Italian Ambassador Luca Attanasio , his bodyguard Vittorio Iacovacci, and World Food Programme (WFP) driver Mustapha Milambo after the UN convoy they were travelling in was attacked near Goma, is a stark reminder that the DRC is still not ready to relinquish its … [Read more...] about Opinion: Another cold case in the Democratic Republic of Congo?

Lockdown has been tough for all of our hairstyles but one plucky sheep has been given his first trim in what could have been many many years. The wild and struggling animal was found in a forest in Australia with a fleece that was so overgrown he could barely see. When it was fully removed his fleece weighed more than 35kg (77lbs). The sheep, which has been named Baarack, was found by a member of the public who contacted the Edgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary near Lancefield, Victoria, about 37 miles (60km) north of Melbourne. "It would appear Baarack was once an owned sheep," said the Mission's Kyle Behrend. MUMS have hit out at Marks and Spencer over the name of their new jeans, claiming it’s making them not want to wear them. While the high-street store is usually a hit with parents, it seems they’ve taken umbridge over the new ‘mom’ jeans on sale. M&S shared a snap on Facebook of a woman modelling the new style, which costs £39.50, but shoppers criticised everything from the colour to the name. Uploading the snap on social media, the retail giant said: “Tuesday morning strolls in neutral tones and our trusty mom jeans.” The trousers, which come in six different colours, are described as “Mom fit is high on the waist, slim at the hips and slightly tapered through the leg”. But the name, and spelling, didn’t go down well online, with the snap racking up hundreds of disgruntled comments, with people pointing out white might not be the best colour for mums. PARENTS and grandparents will always have a wall, table or shelf dedicated to family pictures - with weddings, babies and graduation often taking the top spot. But one woman discovered she'd been "bumped" from her mum's proud photo display, only to be hit with a brutal explanation from her unsympathetic mum. Rachel Frost, from America, shared the exchange on TikTok and was frankly gobsmacked after inspecting her mum's collection of framed snaps. There were snaps from some key milestones over the years, including weddings and many of her grandchildren, so Rachel asked her mum why she wasn't to be seen. In the video, she says: "Mum… did I get bumped? I'm not here." Her mum reassured her by picking up a frame which was more or less hidden, pointing out she was in fact a part of the family display. But the pictures of her as a child appeared to be moved to the bottom back corner, instead replaced by other family members. Clearly disappointed by her new position in … [Read more...] about Savage mum’s harsh response to ‘bumping’ her daughter from her prized family achievements photo display
