Tess Roby Into icy synthpop and worship at the twin temples of Nico and Kate Bush? Then Montreal’s Tess Roby is the Toronto-raised singer-songwriter for you. A member of the Canadian Children’s Opera Company for almost a decade – presumably having to leave when she was no longer an actual child – her accomplished vocals are the real star here. If that doesn’t swing it, then you might be into the fact that year’s languid Given Signs sounds a bit like Foals at their dreamiest.Shacklewell Arms, E8, Monday 1 October … [Read more...] about Young arts run free: the 50 best things to do in the UK for zilch

Brighton & Hove city council is using all the additional powers it can to counter HMOs in the worst-affected parts of the city, with more proposals in the pipeline. Ancienne Belgique More than a century old, AB, as the locals call it, is a medium-size venue for rock, electronic, jazz, global, experimental and pop acts and is in the city centre, close to the Bourse (stock exchange). The main room is big enough to house major artists: all-standing crowds or fully seated ones, or a combination. Whoever is playing, expect the sound quality to be superb. Tokens are needed to purchase drinks, although the side-bar in the street around the corner is cash-friendly. There’s the AB Club upstairs, for smaller draws, and also the intimate AB Salon (above the side-bar) that regularly presents free electronic or experimental gigs. One week in October included AB shows by Australian psych-rockers King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, German ambient keyboardist Nils Frahm, French-Colombian cumbia extremists Pixvae and Peruvian electronicists Dengue Dengue Dengue. Upcoming acts include Acid Arab, Moses Boyd, King Krule, and Kelis.• Boulevard Anspach 110, … [Read more...] about 10 of the best music venues in Brussels

Despite the usual color and caricature, this year's events were a little more subdued following the the Hanau shootings. … [Read more...] about Spanish Holocaust-themed Carnival parade sparks outcry
