Widow of truck driver killed in Amtrak collision files wrongful death lawsuit over “ultra-hazardous” crossing

June 30, 2022 by www.cbsnews.com

The widow of a man killed when the truck he was driving was hit by an Amtrak train this week has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. In the suit, Erin Barton alleges that the Missouri railroad crossing where Billy Dean Barton II died was "ultra-hazardous," due in part to the defendants' failures to maintain the intersection. The first of two defendants is Mariano Rodriguez, a manager in the BNSF Railway's engineering department. Rodriguez is in charge of ensuring "the safety, proper inspection and maintenance" of railroad crossings like the one near Mendon, the suit says. But the widow alleges that he failed to do so, citing the crossing's "impaired 'sight triangles,'" an "excessively small crossing angle," and other impairments, including "sloped approaches, brush, trees and vegetation blocking a full view of oncoming trains in some quadrants." She said "the surfaces of the crossing were narrow, rough and poorly maintained." Additionally, the crossing did not have "bells, gates … [Read more...] about Widow of truck driver killed in Amtrak collision files wrongful death lawsuit over “ultra-hazardous” crossing

June 30, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Covid restrictions are just a memory for the UK now, but the effects of the virus are still gripping the nation. Social distancing, shielding and mask wearing was all completely ditched by the UK government in February, 2022, freeing the public to make their own informed decisions on the situation. The nation then came together in celebration during the Platinum Jubilee and other everts such as Glastonbury , making the Covid-era seem like a half-remembered dream. However, cases are back on the rise now that we have entered the summer months, with last reports putting the figure up to 1.7 million, though deaths are on the downward spiral. How many people have died of Covid in the UK? An estimated 1.7 million people have Covid in the UK ( Image: Getty Images) According to the Office of National Statistics, Covid deaths in the UK actually decreased from 335 to 309 in the week ending June 17, 2022. European court makes last-minute attempt to stop execution of captured Brits

June 30, 2022 by metro.co.uk

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has made a last-minute attempt to stop the executions of two British prisoners held in Russian-occupied Ukraine . Aiden Aslin, 28, and Shaun Pinner, 48, were captured in April while fighting with the Ukrainian Marines in the war-torn city of Mariupol. They were given the death penalty by the proxy ‘Supreme Court’ of the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic after being charged with being foreign mercenaries. ECHR said this morning it had issued interim measures to instruct Russia to make sure their death penalty by a firing squad is not carried out. ‘The Court indicated in particular to the government of the Russian Federation, under Rule 39 (interim measures) of the Rules of Court, that they should ensure that the death penalty imposed on the applicants was not carried out,’ the court said in a statement. Under Rule 39, ECHR may indicate interim measures to any party to the European Convention on Human Rights. Alec Baldwin vows to “find” man who tweeted about ‘Rust’ shooting

June 30, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Alec Baldwin snapped back at a Twitter user who made a joke about the shooting on the set of Rust , and vowed to find the man. "I'll find you Mike," Baldwin wrote in his now deleted tweet. The written confrontation came after the Twitter user @mwreyes replied to Baldwin with a joke about the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins . Despite the fact that Baldwin took his comment down, the tweet was widely shared and distributed across social media. The incident occurred on Wednesday when Baldwin tweeted out criticism of former President Donald Trump . "Trump tried to choke a Secret Service agent. I mean...what more do you need?" Baldwin tweeted. This was a reference to recent testimony given by Cassidy Hutchinson , a top aide to Trump's ex-Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, to the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. @mwreyes, who goes by the screen name Mike Williams, fired back at Baldwin with a morbid comment.
