The Queen has made her second appearance of the day as she triggered the lighting of the principal Jubilee beacon at Windsor Castle. At the same time thousands of beacons were lit in villages, towns and cities across the UK to honour the Queen's 70-year reign. Her Majesty started the ceremony from the quadrangle at Windsor Castle, with the Duke of Cambridge representing his grandmother, alongside other members of the Royal Family, at Buckingham Palace, the site of the "Tree of Trees" principal beacon. At Windsor Castle, the Queen, wearing a green jacket, gloves and glasses, pressed the quadrangle to start the lighting of the Jubilee. As she walked from the castle's sovereign entrance into the Quadrangle, the Queen was greeted by more than 100 people who live within the walls of the royal home and were invited to the event. Tuesday morning news briefing: General says UK must be ready for war
The head of the Army today says the UK must be ready for war with Russia. Four months on from Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, General Sir Patrick Sanders is set to compare the assault to the rise of Nazi Germany . He will say that Britain is facing its "1937 moment" and must be ready to "fight and win" to ward off the threat from Russia. In his first public speech as Chief of the General Staff , Sir Patrick will say the UK must be prepared to "act rapidly" to contain Russian expansionism. Nato last night pledged to massively increase its forces available on high alert to more than 300,000 troops, a more-than seven-fold increase. Sir Patrick's intervention is likely to put pressure on Mr Johnson to maintain the size of the Armed Forces after plans were announced to reduce troop numbers in a move to a more modern military. Defence editor Danielle Sheridan reports that, in a separate speech today, Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, is to call for increased … [Read more...] about Tuesday morning news briefing: General says UK must be ready for war
Kevin Spacey to appear in UK court charged with four counts of sexual assault
Kevin Spacey will appear at a court in London this week after being formally charged with sexually assaulting three men. The Hollywood star is accused of four counts of sexual assault and one charge of non-consensual penetrative sex in London and Gloucestershire between 2005 and 2013. Prosecutors announced last month they felt there was enough evidence to charge the 62-year-old, but had to wait until he was in the country before officially charging him. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Spacey was charged in person in the capital on Monday after receiving a postal charge and requisition – a legal document notifying a defendant that a decision has been made to prosecute. A spokesman for the force said: “He was charged in person today in London. Despite potential, Midwestern farms struggle to market fish
When drastic increases in food costs spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic left Andrew Caplinger struggling to find fresh catfish for his restaurants, he decided to try “an experimental” solution — growing his own. In the coming months, the Indianapolis restaurant chain Caplinger’s Fresh Catch Seafood will begin sourcing its second most popular menu item from fish ponds at his 28-acre farm in southern Indiana. The goal is to produce up to half of the 800 to 1,000 pounds of catfish fillets served at the restaurants each week. “I’ve never done anything like this — I’ve sold dead fish my whole entire life,” he said. “It's tough, and it might be risky. But assuming things go well and these fish grow like they should, we won’t have to look at raising our store prices again for some time.” It’s a move that could increase local appetite for fish, Caplinger said. But even with fish and seafood consumption on the rise in the U.S., the number of Midwest aquaculture farms is … [Read more...] about Despite potential, Midwestern farms struggle to market fish

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will pledge that the UK will "do everything possible to ensure Ukraine wins the war and recovers". She will tell the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Switzerland today that the UK will support the embattled nation for the "long haul" and resist Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion. The Foreign Office said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked the UK to champion the recovery of the capital Kyiv and the surrounding region. But attempts to rebuild the area are made more challenging by Russia's ability to hit the capital with missiles as the Kremlin's forces slowly advance in the east. Ms Truss will use the conference in the city of Lugano to set out a vision to give both immediate and long-term support to Ukraine.
