The Act of Killing: don’t give an Oscar to this snuff movie
The Act of Killing won the documentary prize at the Baftas last week and is the favourite to win the much-coveted Oscar. I watch many documentaries on behalf of the BBC each year and I go to festivals. I'm a doc obsessive. By my own, not quite reliable reckoning, I've been asked by fans to show The Act of Killing on the BBC at least five times. I've never encountered a film greeted by such extreme responses – both those who say it is among the best films and those who tell me how much they hate it. Much about the film puzzles me. I am still surprised by the fact that so many critics listed it among their favourite films of last year. For those who haven't seen the film, it investigates the circumstances in which half-a-million Indonesian leftists were murdered in the 1960s, at the instigation of a government that is still in power. You might think this is a recondite subject, worthy of a late-night screening for insomniacs or atrocity buffs on BBC4, but, no, the film-maker Joshua … [Read more...] about The Act of Killing: don’t give an Oscar to this snuff movie

They've been hard at work alongside each other on BBC's new drama The Trial Of Christine Keeler. And Ellie Bamber joined her co-star Sophie Cookson for Serpentine Galleries and Chanel's Summer Party 2019 at Kensington Gardens on Tuesday night. While she looked stylish in the white jumpsuit, as the 22-year-old actresses left the bash with the Kingsman star, 28, it became clear that she had ruined her trousers and shoes as they were covered in mud. Serpentine Summer Party 2019: Ellie Bamber RUINED her white jumpsuit as she emerged from bash in London with a muddy hem alongside co-star Sophie Cookson on Tuesday When she arrived, Ellie set pulses racing in a a halterneck backless white top and matching flared trousers, which she paired with pearl heels that became dirty as the night wore on. The Les Miserables star styled her blonde locks into loose waves, and she used a light palette of make-up to highlight her pretty features. Faryal Makhdoom PICTURE EXCLUSIVE: Star pulls out all the stops for her baby daughter Alayna as she and husband Amir Khan throw a £75k rainforest-themed party to celebrate her first birthday in Bolton
She juggles life as a make-up entrepreneur with her role as a mother to her two children, Lamaisah, five, and Alayna, 14 months. And Faryal Makhdoom proved family comes first as she and her boxer husband Amir Khan threw their youngest daughter Alayna a lavish party costing £75,000, for her first birthday at the University Of Bolton Stadium - the same place the couple held their £150,000 engagement party and eldest daughter's £100,000 second birthday bash - earlier this month. Ahead of their move from Manchester to London at the end of the year, beauty guru Faryal, 27, and sportsman Amir, 32, pulled out all the stops for Alayna as they transformed the extravagant venue into an Amazonian-inspired rainforest, complete with statues of tropical animals, vibrant bushes and a glossy jungle-print dancefloor by designers Enchanted by Syma. ‘Crass and contemptible’: is Clint Eastwood’s new movie built on a lie?
Clint Eastwood’s indignant, Oscar-buzzed new drama Richard Jewell tasks itself with a noble and initially justifiable aim: to tell the truth about a man whose name has been unfairly slandered. It’s written, quite literally on the poster, with the words “true” and “truth” promising, at long last, facts behind the headlines that followed the tragic bombing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. But there’s a catch. In an attempt to clear the name of Jewell, the security guard wrongfully accused of creating and planting the pipe bomb that directly killed one person and injured 111 others, the film throws another name under the bus, that of Kathy Scruggs, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution journalist who broke the story that he was under investigation. Its recent premiere at the AFI festival was accompanied by unease over a scene where Scruggs trades sex for a tip from an FBI agent, a damaging allegation that’s yet to be supported by any tangible … [Read more...] about ‘Crass and contemptible’: is Clint Eastwood’s new movie built on a lie?
