‘We survived the 2008 financial crash and the Second World War – but I’ve never known a time like this’
Chris Carr’s family building company is facing the worst conditions he has ever witnessed. Set up by his grandparents more than 100 years ago, Grimsby-based Carr & Carr has survived multiple economic cycles and major global events including the 2008 financial crash and the Second World War. But current conditions of surging material costs and availability – combined with staff shortages – are unlike anything previously experienced. “I’ve never known a time like this – it’s the perfect storm,” says Carr, who has been a developer for almost forty years. “The worst thing at the moment is the materials shortages, and we’re seeing double-digit increases in prices as well. “It’s difficult to determine a price for a job and tell someone when it will be completed, because you don’t know how much the materials are going to cost and you don’t know when you’re going to get them.” Carr, however, could be one of the luckier ones. The industry-wide problems have forced hundreds of … [Read more...] about ‘We survived the 2008 financial crash and the Second World War – but I’ve never known a time like this’
Ukraine war: Six key developments to know about on Monday
1. Ukraine says Snake Island 'military operation' completed The Ukrainian flag has been raised again on Snake Island in the Black Sea, Ukraine's military said on Monday, after Russian forces withdrew from the strategic outpost last week. "The military operation has been concluded, and ... the territory (Snake Island) has been returned to the jurisdiction of Ukraine," Natalia Humeniuk, spokesperson for Ukraine's southern military command, told a news conference. Some analysts have said Russia's withdrawal from Snake Island off Ukraine's southwestern coast could loosen its blockade on Ukrainian ports. But a Kyiv-based foreign diplomat told Reuters it was still not enough to allow for safe transit of Ukrainian grain. "There is a requirement for demining, and Russia still has capabilities (military vessels, costal defence systems and air superiority) that will allow them to interdict shipping lanes," the diplomat said. 2. The Foreign Office said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked the UK to champion the recovery of the capital Kyiv and the surrounding region. But attempts to rebuild the area are made more challenging by Russia's ability to hit the capital with missiles as the Kremlin's forces slowly advance in the east.
