Olympic rowing champion Hamish Bond is adding another strange twist to his already amazing and bizarre sporting career, shifting his cycling aspirations from the road to the track. Since retiring from the water, Bond, 32, has established his reputation on the bike, setting a new course record at the national time trial championship, winning a Gold Coast Commonwealth Games bronze medal on the Gold Coast this year and finishing 25th at the world championships. But after his mid-field finish at Innsbruck, he admitted the result was "a reality check" and that has prompted him to re-think his aspirations for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Rowing: New Zealand’s world champs failure extends beyond rowers
Rowing New Zealand will return home with no gold medals and no world champions for the first time since 2001, but eight-time champion Eric Murray insists there's no need to panic. "We're probably just a little bit disappointed for the fact that we're just used to getting a tonne of medals," he told Newshub. Murray, who combined with Hamish Bond in an 'unbeatable' pair for seven years, believes the team likely missed something crucial in the six weeks of preparation prior. Defending women's double sculls world champs Olivia Loe and Brooke Donoghue claimed silver behind Lithuania. Loe and Donoghue finished 2.13s behind Lithuanian pair of Milda Valcuikaite and Ivea Adomaviciute, who crossed the line in 6m 44.15s. The US finished third. Men's double scullers Chris Harris and John Storey took home bronze, after an incredible race to the finish. They were behind early, but a late surge saw them pip Great Britain at the line to finish third, with Switzerland in second and France taking home gold.
