A former Paralympian has been fitted with a bionic hand that can be updated with new movements and gestures from anywhere in the world. Australian swimmer Jessica Smith said the device is "amazing" and that she chose to have it despite a traumatic experience with a prosthetic when she was a child. The Nexus hand is made by British firm Covvi, based in Leeds, and its Bluetooth feature means its experts can update it remotely via an app. Like other bionic hands, it converts electrical impulses from the upper arm muscles into movements powered by the device's motors. "The fact we can change some of the things that the customer wants remotely is a really powerful thing and a first to market," said Covvi chief executive Simon Pollard. Ms Smith said updates to the hand's functionality can be added quickly. "I've had a few kids ask if I can do different hand gestures, some polite some not so polite," she said. British company develops new bionic hand that can learn new gestures
Australian swimmer Jessica Smith has been fitted with a British bionic hand that can be updated remotely anywhere in the world. The 2004 Athens Paralympian was born without a left hand and a childhood accident left her with an uneasy relationship with prosthetics. Covvi, based in Leeds has created the Nexus hand, a Bionic device that converts electrical impulses from the muscles in the upper arm into movement powered by motors in the hand. The bionic arm allows a user can hold a glass, open a door or pick up an egg. The device can also be updated with new gestures, anytime, anywhere. Smith, who is also a speaker and children’s author said Covvi was already creating new movements for her. ‘I’ve had a few kids ask if I can do different hand gestures, some polite some not so polite,’ she said. ‘I asked Covvi this morning, and I know that will be done in the next couple of hours.’ Smith, who was fitted with the device in April at the age of 37, said the tech was not … [Read more...] about British company develops new bionic hand that can learn new gestures
Italy election: Far-right leader Giorgia Meloni rides wave of support
Italian politician Giorgia Meloni is riding a wave of support that could see her become the country's first female prime minister and its first far-right leader since World War II. Still, there are nagging signs that such a legacy can't be shaken off so easily: Her party's symbol includes an image of a tricoloured flame, borrowed from a neo-fascist party formed shortly after the end of the war. If the Brothers of Italy prevails at the polls on 25 September, and the 45-year-old Meloni becomes premier, it will come almost 100 years to the month after Benito Mussolini, Italy’s fascist dictator, came to power in October 1922. Meloni proudly introduced Caio Giulio Cesare Mussolini, a great-grandson of the … [Read more...] about Italy election: Far-right leader Giorgia Meloni rides wave of support
