Dnipro, Ukraine — Towns in Ukraine 's eastern industrial heartland of Donbas are being reduced to ash by Russia's advancing forces. Ukraine's leaders, and its soldiers on the battlefield, say it won't stop there. "It's not just the Donbas region they're after," one Ukrainian soldier warned of Vladimir Putin's forces. "They want to move forward. They send their people to death…to destroy our nation." But Russia's animosity appears to extend even beyond Ukraine's borders. Pope Francis says Ukraine war may have been "provoked" Putin's naval blockade in the Black Sea has left some 25 million tons of harvested grain to rot at Ukraine's southern ports. Most of it was earmarked for developing countries, including South Sudan. Citing skyrocketing global food costs, the World Food Program has said it's slashing the amount of aid it can provide to 1.7 million people in the impoverished African nation. Fukushima nuclear reactor at risk of collapse if another earthquake hits facility
A melted-down reactor in the Fukushima nuclear power station resting precariously on corroded supports could be toppled over by a strong earthquake, new photos have revealed. The images, which were taken by a robot, showed the reactor was resting unsteadily on a fragile frame of corroded supports. While the interior of the damaged Dai-ichi reactors in Japan was too radioactive for humans to enter safely, a remote-controlled robotic camera has sent back pictures from reactor No 1. The reactor was one of three which melted down in 2011, when a catastrophic tsunami caused by an earthquake knocked out the cooling systems at the plant. The 9.0 magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011, was so forceful it shifted the Earth off its axis and triggered a tsunami which swept over the main island of Honshu and killed more than 18,000 people. More than 1,000 mutilated dolphins wash up on French beaches in three months
Up to 1,100 dolphins with badly mutilated bodies have washed up along the coast of France in just three months – the highest number in 40 years. Examinations of the animals found many with their fins cuts off and other extreme injuries, thought to have occurred as the dolphins tried to free themselves from fishing nets. The deaths have alarmed environmental activists and France’s ecology ministry has launched a national plan to protect the animals after campaigners warned it could lead to them becoming extinct. Willy Daubin, of La Rochelle University’s National Center for Scientific Research, said: ‘There’s never been a number this high. ‘Already in three months, we have beaten last year’s record, which was up from 2017 and even that was the highest in 40 years.’ Ryan Giggs has 'ugly and sinister side that adoring fans never saw', court told Though Daubin said 90 per cent of the fatalities resulted from accidental capture in industrial nets, the reason behind … [Read more...] about More than 1,000 mutilated dolphins wash up on French beaches in three months
Rescuers plan how to extract beluga whale from River Seine
Rescue workers are planning how to extract a beluga whale from the River Seine. The Arctic mammal has found itself trapped between a set of locks in a stretch of the watercourse between Paris and Rouen. Efforts are continuing to try and get the whale to eat, but they have so far failed. The marine conservationist group Sea Shepherd France said on Monday that "feeding attempts are continuing in parallel to finding a solution to get it out of the lock in the best conditions". Over the weekend, the beluga was given a "vitamin cocktail" in an attempt to keep its nutrition up. Advertisement Lamya Essemlali, president Sea Shepherd France, told a news conference this weekend: "It is really extremely thin. Its bones are protruding. I don't know if it's already too late". Attempts to feed the animal - with both dead herrings and live trouts - have proved fruitless. Ukraine war: What are the risks of a nuclear accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant amid the war with Russia?
Another attack on Europe's largest nuclear power plant amid the war in Ukraine "underlines the very real risk of nuclear disaster", according to the United Nations watchdog. Rafael Grossi, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), described shelling at the Zaporizhzhia plant in southern Ukraine on Saturday as "out of control" and "extremely serious". 'No basis' for Zelenskyy-Putin peace talks - follow Ukraine updates live While Russia and Ukraine blamed each other - accusing the other side of "nuclear terrorism" - Mr Grossi urged for the "utmost restraint" around the site.
