Germany will impose strict border controls and impose travel bans for the Czech Republic and Austria, it announced Thursday. The announcement came after the South African B.1.351 coronavirus variant was found to be prevalent in Austria's Tyrol region and the British B.1.1.7 variant was found circulating in the Czech Republic. This prompted German authorities to declare the border regions virus mutation areas. German interior minister Horst Seehofer said that checkpoints would be established on the border, but that commercial travel would not be disrupted. Returning Germans and essential workers such as doctors will also be exempted. "That has been agreed with the German chancellor and the vice- chancellor." Germany, Turkey to resume regular consultations in sign of thawing relations
High-ranking officials from Ankara were due to hold talks with representatives of Germany's Interior Ministry in Berlin on Wednesday, according to a report in Die Welt newspaper. The meeting — the first of its kind in almost a year — aimed to discuss efforts to fight the "Islamic State" terror group, the report said. "Germany is a point of origin and a destination for jihadi terrorists, whose journeys to and from Syria take them via Turkey," an Interior Ministry spokeswoman told Die Welt . Germany: 3 injured in mail bomb blast
A total of three people were injured in an explosion in an office block in Neckarsulm, a town in southwest Germany, on Wednesday. The explosion was caused by a bomb in either a letter or a small parcel, a spokesman for the local police force in nearby Heilbronn told DW. Around 100 people were cleared as police evacuated the building following the explosion. Rescue workers are at the scene, along with members of state's investigative police force for more serious crimes. What we know so far: The explosion took place at an administrative building on Rötelstraße in Neckarsulm. Police said two people suffered minor injuries. Another person was more badly hurt. A sniffer dog has been deployed to search through the administrative building. A rescue helicopter was also deployed. Local media reported the explosion had taken place at a Lidl administrative building. The police would not comment on this.
