· January 7, 2021 ·

COVID vaccines will be available from GP surgeries from today - as the race to protect Brits from the virus is ramped up. The Oxford/AstraZeneca jab can be stored at fridge temperatures making it easier to administer, unlike the Pfizer jab which requires storage at -70C. It's hoped more than 700 GP surgeries will be delivering vaccines by the end of the week - after the UK recorded the highest daily death toll since April. The UK reported a further 1,041 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday. Record numbers are also currently in hospital with coronavirus, with a further 3,500 admitted in England on Monday. Some 1.3 million people have already received either the Pfizer/BioNTech or Oxford/AstraZeneca jab. And millions of extra Covid vaccines could be ready within weeks as approval times for fresh batches are slashed to just five days. The jabs will be given to those deemed most vulnerable to the virus first - and are … [Read more...] about Covid vaccines available in GP surgeries TODAY – all you need to know about getting yours

Mars Perseverance’s parachute carried secret NASA message

· January 24, 2021 ·

The enormous orange and white parachute deployed by NASA's Perseverance rover to land on Mars contained a secret message, thanks to a puzzle lover on the spacecraft team. Systems engineer Ian Clark used a binary code to spell out "dare mighty things'' — a line from former US President Theodore Roosevelt — in the orange and white strips of the 70-foot (21-meter) parachute. He also included the GPS coordinates for the mission's headquarters at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. This combination of images from video made available by NASA shows steps in the descent of the Mars Perseverance rover as it approaches the surface of the planet Mars rover message encoding was 'super fun' Clark, a crossword hobbyist, came up with the idea two years ago. Engineers wanted an unusual pattern in the nylon fabric to know how the parachute was oriented during descent. Turning it into a secret message was "super fun," he said Tuesday. Only about six people knew … [Read more...] about Mars Perseverance’s parachute carried secret NASA message

· February 23, 2021 ·

PIERS Morgan has installed a panic button by his bed after receiving death threats. A sinister troll called the TV star a "marked man" and vowed: "This isn't a threat, Piers it's a promise, you're getting killed." The 55-year-old responded by beefing up security to protect his family. Mobile numbers for Piers and his wife Celia have been listed with a ‘rapid response’ police unit. If the panic button is activated, cops will be at the family home within four minutes. Police attended Piers’ London home to discuss their well-being. Celia Walden revealed how the scare left her with a “trembly feeling” in her stomach. And she has to look over her shoulder every time she leaves the house. The couple made up a “convincing lie” about the device for their nine-year-old daughter, Elise. Journalist Celia said: “Within hours, the police were taking down a statement, and as I write, Facebook (which owns Instagram) is helping the police track down the IP address of the … [Read more...] about Piers Morgan’s wife Celia Walden reveals police installed panic button next to their bed after terrifying death threats

Amnesty strips Navalny of ‘prisoner of conscience’ status

· January 24, 2021 ·

Amnesty International said on Wednesday that it no longer recognizes jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny as a "prisoner of conscience." The global rights watchdog cited the politician's past "advocacy of hatred" as the reason behind its decision. It, however, did not mention any specific remarks made by him in the past. At the start of his political career a decade ago, Navalny drew criticism for his anti-immigrant statements. "Some of these comments, which Navalny has not publicly denounced, reach the threshold of advocacy of hatred, and this is at odds with Amnesty's definition of a prisoner of conscience," the London-based NGO said. Watch video 00:37 Borrell: 'We have to sanction the people who are directly related with his arrest' Amnesty continues to call for Navalny's release Over the past few years, Navalny has emerged as Russia's leading critic of President Vladimir Putin by publishing investigations into corruption and leading … [Read more...] about Amnesty strips Navalny of ‘prisoner of conscience’ status
