Refugee women and children ‘beaten, raped and starved in Libyan hellholes’
Women and children making the dangerous journey to Europe to flee poverty and conflicts in Africa are being beaten, raped and starved in “living hellholes” in Libya, the United Nations children’s agency, Unicef, has said. Children are being sexually abused, coerced into prostitution and work, and held to ransom for months in squalid, overcrowded detention centres, as they flee war and poverty in Africa to undertake one of the most dangerous journeys in the world to Europe, the agency warned in a new report. Last year, more than 181,000 refugees and migrants, including more than 25,800 unaccompanied children, arrived in Italy via the central Mediterranean smuggling route, through Libya. Thousands of people died on the way. Unofficial detention centres controlled by militia serve as lucrative businesses that profit from trafficking, and are “no more than forced labour camps … and makeshift prisons”, Unicef said. “For the thousands of migrant … [Read more...] about Refugee women and children ‘beaten, raped and starved in Libyan hellholes’

A year of uprisings and revolutions: uncertainty reigns in the Arab world
This has been a momentous year for the Arab world. But as spring and summer gave way to a bloody and inconclusive winter, the fate of the region's uprisings remained uncertain. Unpredictable, extraordinary events affecting millions have become the norm. Egypt, the largest and most important Arab country, is only at the start of a long road to change. The generals who persuaded Hosni Mubarak to step down in the face of spontaneous, peaceful protests after 30 years in power are still in charge. But they are starting to grasp that transition to democracy will not easily accommodate their dominance. Elections finally got under way after another spasm of violence in Cairo's Tahrir Square. Things look far better in Tunisia, where the Jasmine revolution was triggered by the suicide of a young man whose despair seemed emblematic of an entire generation. Its first election since the departure of Zein al-Abidine Bin Ali went smoothly. But Tunisia's success, built on developed institutions, an … [Read more...] about A year of uprisings and revolutions: uncertainty reigns in the Arab world
Artists assemble! How collectives took over the art world
Last week, the four artists shortlisted for the Turner prize turned themselves into a four-strong collective in order to win as a group – a move that caused controversy in the press, consternation over social media and a bust-up on Radio 4 between the Guardian’s art critic Adrian Searle and his Sunday Times counterpart, Waldemar Januszczak. The four artists – Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Helen Cammock, Oscar Murillo and Tai Shani – said they came together “in the name of commonality, multiplicity and solidarity”. In case the politics underpinning the gesture were not obvious, the artists accepted their equal split of the £40,000 prize bearing stickers supporting Jeremy Corbyn and demanding: “Tories out.” “Historically,” says Ellen Mara De Wachter, author of a book called Co-Art: Artists on Creative Collaboration, “collectives have always been linked with a leftwing outlook. These four artists didn’t just talk the … [Read more...] about Artists assemble! How collectives took over the art world
