By Susan Ninan Published 2 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing In just half a day, the Indian women's chess team went from the near-certainty of a gold medal at the Chess Olympiad to the dismay of a bronze. They still made history - as the first-ever Indian women's team to win a medal at an Olympiad. The Indians were no underdogs. Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, Tania Sachdev, R Vaishali and Bhakti Kulkarni - a delightful mix of long-serving mould-breakers and young prodigies - were the top seeds in the women's section. It helped that neither Russia nor China participated in the Olympiad. The Indians were within touching distance of gold for the most part of their campaign - and in sole lead heading into the final round - before an awry 1-3 loss to USA. Tania and Bhakti bungled their lower board games while Humpy and Vaishali held on to draws. Tania, unbeaten … [Read more...] about Chess Olympiad 2022: Meet the Indian women who made chess history

Olympic champion Mahe Drysdale takes shot at Games stay-at-homes over Zika
MARK TAYLOR FAIRFAXMEDIA NZ Mahe Drysdale can't understand why some of the world's top golfers wouldn't want to go to Rio. Mahe Drysdale just doesn't get it. The Olympic champion single sculler from New Zealand has devoted the greater part of his life to chasing Games glory, and he is clearly befuddled by the blatant disregard the world's leading male golfers are showing for the world's four-yearly sporting pinnacle. So Drysdale has spoken out on social media about the issue, not name-checking the 'refusenik' golfers as such, but making it clear he has no time for their petty excuses as they've robbed the sport's return to the Olympics, after a 112-year absence, of its headline names. Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day, the top four men's players in the world, are all bypassing Rio, citing concerns over the Zika virus or general health worries as their primary reason. LEICESTER boss Brendan Rodgers has declared Wesley Fofana and James Maddison are NOT for sale to deal Chelsea and Newcastle a major blow. The pair have been heavily linked with moves away from the King Power Stadium this summer, with both players subject to failed bids. Thomas Tuchel has made landing centre-back Fofana a key priority, with it claimed how the Blues had been knocked back with an opening offer of £63million . And SunSport understands that the West London outfit will be willing to meet the Foxes' whopping £85m valuation of the Frenchman . TICK TOCK, tick tock. Can you hear that Brendan Rodgers? It’s the sound of the clock counting down the days to Leicester’s first game of the new season.
