How one Afghan family escaped the Taliban
It's been a year since the chaotic end of America's war in Afghanistan, and it doesn't look any better in retrospect to Elliot Ackerman: "This was a collapse of American morals and how we treat our allies," he said. "It was a collapse of American competence, our ability to execute this mission." For Ackerman, who served four combat tours in Afghanistan (both with the Marines and the CIA), the collapse was also personal. "Suddenly, I'm right back in the war. I thought I left the war." He had been away from the war for a decade making a living as a writer. Now he has written a book about America's longest war called "The Fifth Act" (published by Penguin Press on August 9). CBS News national security correspondent David Martin asked, "Five acts. Shakespeare's tragedies?" "You have Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden, and the fifth act, the denouement, is the Taliban," Ackerman said. The Taliban had outlasted the world's greatest superpower and were looking to take their revenge on Afghans … [Read more...] about How one Afghan family escaped the Taliban

I uncovered America’s secret serial killer – he was as psychotic as Ted Bundy and kept sick snaps of victims in shoebox
NO one knew that the blue-eyed and “silver-tongued” Bruce Lindahl was a serial killer - until new DNA technology revealed his horrendous crimes. Lindahl is believed to have murdered at least nine young people during a nine-year period up until 1981 in the United States and is being investigated for many more cold cases. The true nature of this stone-hearted kidnapper, rapist and strangler only emerged when Detective Chris Loudon tried to solve the 46-year-old case of slain schoolgirl Pam Maurer, 16, from Lisle, near Chicago in Illinois. His investigation led him to a box full of naked photographs of young women taken by the twisted Lindahl. Inside were Polaroids and prints of often terrified, underage and drugged females either tricked or forced to come home with the sadistic predator. Most escaped alive, but many did not. Severely ill patient, 36, was planning funeral before miracle drug transformed her life
A severely ill patient has told how she was at the point of planning her funeral before she was given a miracle drug and given a new lease of life. Gillian Docherty, 36, from Glasgow, had battled cystic fibrosis all her life, but four years ago, her lung function dropped to 38 per cent. She became concerned when she couldn't do simple things like climb stairs, and it was at this point that she began to get her affairs in order, Daily Record reports. Although Gillian, who worked as a dentist, kept active, her health rapidly declined and she made trips to the CF service at the QEUH . She said: “Being aged 33 and not being able to climb up a flight of stairs is not a position anyone would want to be in. “I couldn’t even go to the cinema. People would complain about my coughing. I was severely underweight, constantly exhausted and just existing.” Gillian Docherty pictured with husband Andy Docherty and baby Frederick ( Image: UGC) The average lifespan for a CF … [Read more...] about Severely ill patient, 36, was planning funeral before miracle drug transformed her life
Ex-mandarin with ‘no economic experience’ lined up for Bank of England role
A former mandarin with “no economic experience” is on course to be appointed to the Bank of England’s board after civil servants told the Chancellor she would “make a strong contribution to improving diversity and inclusion”. Dame Clare Moriarty, a former permanent secretary of the environment department, has been selected by Nadhim Zahawi, having been lined up by Rishi Sunak before his resignation last month . A source close to Mr Sunak denied that any of his special advisers carried out due diligence checks on Dame Clare. But a government source criticised the decision to put her forward for the role amid the growing cost of living crisis and pressure over the Bank’s handling of inflation. On Friday, Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, warned that “something has gone wrong” at Threadneedle Street and, writing for The Telegraph , Liz Truss said the spike in inflation was “exacerbated by monetary policy”. The government source said: “Appointing a woke ex-mandarin … [Read more...] about Ex-mandarin with ‘no economic experience’ lined up for Bank of England role
The real rot at the heart of the Bank of England
Let’s hope he’s right this time. If Andrew Bailey and pals at the Bank of England are wrong about inflation again, we’ll need higher interest rates and a deeper recession to drive it out of the system. That’s the trouble with losing credibility. Once you’ve lost it, you need to work harder and harder to get it back. The Bank this week released a dire new set of growth and inflation forecasts. A long, hard recession is coming and inflation is meant to peak at 13 per cent this autumn and then head conveniently back to the target of 2 per cent in early 2024. Of course, in May, the Bank thought inflation would peak around 9 per cent. In December last year, the Bank said that inflation was due to “transitory” factors and would peak at 4.5 per cent earlier this year. It’s not hard to spot the pattern. As Mr Bailey argues, it’s not the Bank of England’s fault if Vladimir Putin has decided to cut off the gas. The governor’s imperative, naturally, is to defend his own and his institution’s … [Read more...] about The real rot at the heart of the Bank of England
