Arsonists have torched an iconic Wirral pub. Crews were called at 12.15am today and on the scene minutes later to find the now disused Rock pub in Rock Ferry on fire. The fire at the pub - opposite Rock Ferry train station - is believed to have been started deliberately, police confirmed today. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said they were at the scene for more than two hours as they tackled the blaze in the the three-storey building on Highfield Road. Two teams of two firefighters used high pressure hose reel jets to bring the fire under control with crews going into the ground and first floor of the empty property. Nobody was inside the building and no-one was injured. And a Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed: "We were on site until 2.35am and handed this over to Merseyside Police. People in Wirral will head to the polls next month to vote in what could be the most crucial Local Election in years. With the ruling Labour group holding the balance of power by a single seat, every vote will count on May 2, with the possibility of the local authority going into No Overall Control. Last year , there were margins as narrow as 23 votes, so candidates, campaigners and elected councillors have been out on the streets battling for the support of every one of the peninsula's residents. Police are appealing for information after a woman was attacked in a Wirral park. Officers were called to Coronation Gardens in West Kirby at around 11.40pm last night following reports that a woman in her 20's had been sexually assaulted. The woman was taken to hospital and is currently being supported by specialist officers. Coronation Gardens is in a popular part of West Kirby, near to the Marine Lake and the promenade. The park was cordoned off on Easter Sunday morning with many local residents and nearby café owners wondering what was going on. One dog walker, who did not wish to be named, said: "I normally walk my dog in here at around 8am but the park was all cordoned off, you couldn't get through either side and there were lots of police around." A staff member at Green Onions Cafe said: "We heard something might be going on in the park as customers were coming in saying it was taped off and that there were forensic teams there." National breakfast radio turned into a Wirral walk down memory lane this morning when DJ Greg James sent his newsreader off on a bizarre tangent. When a guest called Erin, who is from Wirral, rang in to the quiz segment of the Greg James Breakfast Show host Greg saw an opportunity to put her together with fellow Wirralian - newsreader Roisin Hastie - for a quick chat about where they grew up. The BBC journalist agreed with Erin that: “Wirral is the best place to be, no-one else believes it... but it is the best place to be.” They traded their most loved places and things, including walking to Hilbre Island , hanging out on West Kirby beach and indulging in an ice cream from the famous Nicholls of Parkgate, in Neston. While they shared affection for the area, a marked difference between their accents soon stood out.
