Weakest Gulf Stream in 1,000 years could bring more ‘extreme’ winters to UK and Europe, says study

· February 25, 2021 ·

The Gulf Stream that helps warm the UK and northwest Europe is at its weakest in over 1,000 years and could lead to more "extreme and intense" winters, according to researchers. They say the slowdown observed in the 20th century is "unprecedented" and likely connected to climate change. The Gulf Stream is part of a larger "conveyer belt" of ocean currents known as Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and carries warm water from the tip of Florida towards Europe. Its effect ensures Britain has relatively mild winters and without it experts believe temperatures would be around 5C cooler. Joe Root makes comments about pitch as England humiliated by India inside two days

· February 25, 2021 ·

England were humiliated by 10 wickets in the shortest Test match since the war. All done and dusted inside 140.2 overs, England's hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final were also dashed as India took a 2-1 lead in the series with one match left to play. The over reliance on Joe Root's batting this winter was exposed for the second match in succession, but so too perhaps was their reliance on his bowling as he claimed the first five wicket haul of his career. But just when Root thought his 5-8 as part of bowling India out for 145 in response to England's 112, might have given his side a way back into the game, all hopes were dashed by a second innings horror show of 81 all out. The state of the pitch has been the main talking point with the ball bursting through the surface from day one and 17 wickets falling on day two. Some balls turned violently to put huge doubts into batsmen's minds, but the most damage was done by balls not turning and going straight on with … [Read more...] about Joe Root makes comments about pitch as England humiliated by India inside two days

‘Normal’ summer hope for Brits as lockdown to end on June 21 after 4 key steps

· February 22, 2021 ·

Boris Johnson has raised hopes of a ‘normal’ summer by announcing plans to lift all Covid restrictions in England by June 21. The Prime Minister set out a four-step easing of restrictions starting with the return of all children to school and social mixing outdoors ( see below ). He predicted that the success of the vaccine roll-out meant: “Today the end really is in sight”. Mr Johnson told MPs: “A wretched year will give way to a Spring and a Summer that will be incomparably better”. He later added that the “crocus of hope is poking through the frost”. But in a dramatic shift in tone, he stressed that his approach must now be “cautious” to avoid a fourth national lockdown. And he admitted that he could not guarantee that the measures would be “irreversible” - although he wanted them to be. What is your view? Have your say in the comments section Tory MPs have urged him to lift measures by April 26 now that more than 17.7m people have received their first Covid … [Read more...] about ‘Normal’ summer hope for Brits as lockdown to end on June 21 after 4 key steps

COVID-19: More women than men furloughed as 4.7m use scheme, Treasury data reveals

· February 25, 2021 ·

There were an estimated 4.7 million employees furloughed at the end of January with women accounting for the majority of the number, according to provisional Treasury figures. They showed a leap in demand for the Job Retention Scheme during the month as England entered its third COVID-19 lockdown, forcing hospitality and non-essential retail businesses into a winter hibernation. The furlough scheme, which has been extended three times, provides up to 80% of salaries to a cap of £2,500 per month. The latest data showed that the number of women furloughed had risen to 2.32 million by 31 January while the number of men stood at 2.18 million.
