The first victim of the volcano disaster on a New Zealand tourist island has today been named as tour guide Hayden Marshall-Inman.  The victim's brother, Mark Inman, confirmed his death and said Mr Marshall-Inman had 'passed away doing the one thing he loved'.  The tour guide is one of at least five people killed, but at least 20 others are missing and police say they do not expect to find any more survivors on White Island.    Around 50 tourists were believed to be on or around the volcano crater at the time of the powerful eruption at 2.11pm local time on Monday.    Eighteen survivors have been evacuated - some suffering severe burns - leaving an estimated 27 people unaccounted for. Police say the number of missing is in double figures, but refused to give an exact figure. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said 24 Australians were visiting the island at the time of the disaster, while three Britons were also listed among the missing by … [Read more...] about Pictured: Experienced tour guide killed in New Zealand volcano horror, as police warn no more survivors are expected to be found and more than 20 people are left unaccounted for

New Zealand volcano: No more survivors expected after deadly eruption

· September 12, 2019 ·

Five people were confirmed dead and 18 others injured, with many more missing, after a volcano erupted on Monday afternoon while dozens of cruise ship passengers were exploring a small, uninhabited New Zealand island. "Police believe that anyone who could have been taken from the island alive was rescued at the time of the evacuation," police said in a statement. "Based on the information we have, we do not believe there are any survivors on the island." A massive plume of ash spewed thousands of feet into the air above White Island, also known by the indigenous Maori name Whakaari, which is popular due to its moon-like surface. The five people who died were part of 23 rescued earlier from the island.  Details of the deceased and injured were not provided, however former Whakatane mayor Tony Bonne said a "young, energetic man lost his life," reported the New Zealand Herald.
