A mum who went into "full panic mode" has praised two strangers who helped when her daughter was struggling to breathe. Donna Moore said she "massively panicked" when her daughter Gabriella, five, fell from the monkey bars during a trip to the park in Bury, Greater Manchester. With Gabriella finding it hard to breathe, two Good Samaritans rushed to the aid of Donna, who had her baby with her too. One woman held the baby while the other called 999 to request an ambulance and reassured Donna that help was on its way. Once they arrived at the hospital , doctors said Gabriella had badly winded herself but she was also assessed for potential spleen damage. Donna, 34, told the Manchester Evening News : “I went into serious panic mode as you can imagine when it’s your child. These two wonderful people helped me, one with my baby I had with me and the other ringing the ambulance for my daughter and keeping me calm. “She just fell back off the monkey bars and couldn’t breathe; … [Read more...] about Mum thanks ‘wonderful’ strangers who stepped in as daughter struggled to breathe

How bottom trawling hurts ocean life and speeds up climate change
When Bryce Stewart dived after the toothed, steel-weighted nets of a scallop dredger rumbling over the bottom of the Irish Sea 22 years ago, he witnessed destruction he could never have seen from a boat. "Half crabs. Smashed up sea urchins. Starfish missing some of their arms," said Stewart, a marine ecologist at the University of York. "There was literally a trail of dead and dying things on the seabed." Bottom trawling — a powerful practice in which heavy nets are dragged along the floor of the ocean to catch fish and seafood — is one of the most harmful ways to feed the world. It destroys ecosystems and sweeps up unwanted marine life that gets thrown overboard. From 1950 to 2014, bottom trawlers discarded $560 billion of bycatch, which was more than the value of all catches from longline fishers over the same period. Metal bars and toothed nets wreak havoc on ocean ecosystems Now scientists fear another environmental disaster bubbling under the surface: climate … [Read more...] about How bottom trawling hurts ocean life and speeds up climate change
Sydney floods force tens of thousands of residents to flee homes
Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes in Sydney after torrential downpours caused “life-threatening” floodwaters to rise and rivers to overflow. A severe weather warning for heavy rain, flash flooding and 55mph winds was issued along the coast of the capital and other areas in New South Wales. Warragamba Dam in western Sydney began spilling over overnight and the peak of the overflow would be comparable to the devastating flooding in March last year, authorities said. Although residents in some suburbs had been given the order to evacuate, emergency service officials have urged people not to wait to be told to leave, as they say the rising waters could be life-threatening. The Boys season 3 review: Thought it couldn’t get any more diabolical? You were very wrong
The Boys is without a doubt the bravest, stupidest and most underrated show in recent memory. While the return of Stranger Things makes the world stop in its tracks, even Bridgerton likely caused a dent in pubs’ takings for a weekend with everyone staying in to drool over Jonathan Bailey, The Boys often gets overlooked but its fans are among the most loyal going. Why? Because there is simply nothing more fun than watching a horny dolphin get pelted through a wind screen or a superhero singing a duet to their gills. It’s the most diabolical show imaginable, and after two seasons of relentless WTF you’d think you’ve seen it all. Pah. Without giving too much away at this stage, season three just takes everything you love about The Boys and ramps it up ten-fold. Following the events of season two, The Boys continues a year later and quite literally everything has changed. The Seven is more fragmented than ever, with Homelander now subdued and lost knowing … [Read more...] about The Boys season 3 review: Thought it couldn’t get any more diabolical? You were very wrong

Shark bites leg and arm off tourist who dies in ambulance on way to hospital
An elderly tourist has died after a shark bit her leg and arm off at a popular holiday resort in Egypt. Officials said the 68-year-old woman was barely alive after the shocking attack and died in an ambulance on her way to the Nile Hospital in Hurghada on Friday. Disturbing footage shows the sea turned red with blood as the woman tries to swim away and witnesses scream in horror from a nearby pier. A flotation device is thrown into the water in the hope of pulling her closer to shore but it lands far short. It is believed a Mako shark attacked the Austrian tourist who could not be resuscitated by the emergency responders. It remains unclear how she was able to get to the beach. The Egyptian authorities have now closed off a stretch of the Red Sea coastline for three days, banning all ‘sea activities’ including diving, snorkelling, wind surfing and kite sailing. Shark attacks are relatively rare in Egypt’s Red Sea coastal region. In 2020, a young Ukrainian boy … [Read more...] about Shark bites leg and arm off tourist who dies in ambulance on way to hospital
