Last night a rare blood moon was visible in some parts of Britain - but it came with bizarre warnings that the world is going to end. Here in Merseyside it was cloudy for most of the night but a few doomsday preachers were certain that it would be the end of days. The blood moon prophecy purports to reveal hidden messages in the Christian Bible about the end times approaching. Thankfully the theory was dismissed by astronomers and other experts as nonsense. But other theories are slightly more likely - ranging from an asteroid collision to the Sun swallowing our planet. Our colleagues at the Mirror have taken a look at some of these theories, and whether any of them are at risk of coming true. “England fan shames British media,” was one of many headlines of a similar nature to appear in Kremlin-friendly news outlets in Russia over the past couple of weeks. The story referenced a tweet from England fan Matt Maybury, who on returning from a trip to the World Cup wanted to complain about the “clear propaganda against the Russian people” in the British media. Russia was an “absolutely class country”, he wrote, at odds with what the media had led him to believe. The tweet went viral, and was covered by multiple Russian television stations and news websites as proof of the British media’s lies. It is an accusation that has been heard frequently out here in Russia, both from travelling England fans and from Russian media and officials. Cambridgeshire has been baking for weeks but it could soon be cooling down this week as the heatwave comes to an end. But the slightly cooler temperatures will not last long and another heatwave will roll in toward the end of the week. The fresher conditions will be noticed by Tuesday with cooler air easing towards the UK from Scandinavia. However, high pressure will extend north from the Azores by the end of the week pushing temperatures upwards again towards the high 20s C. These could be even higher in parts by the weekend with the mercury surging again into the 30s. It's has been a sweltering week both in Cambridge and across the UK. In the city, temperatures peaked at 31C on Saturday with many taking to pub gardens, green spaces and their back gardens to enjoy the sunny weather. The met office has warned of very high UV levels and a high pollen count in Cambridge over the course of the coming week while Public Health England has urged people to be careful and look after the vulnerable in the coming heatwave.
