A “summer sale” for Channel migrants is fuelling a rise in crossings with people smugglers slashing prices by as much as £1,500 per person, it has emerged. Social media adverts, discovered on Monday by The Telegraph, saw the traffickers offering “bargain” prices and crossings on small boats that have “never been cheaper,” down from £5,000 to as little as £3,500 per migrant. The promotions were primarily targeted at Albanians who accounted for four in 10 of the nearly 3,000 migrants who crossed the Channel during a six-week period this summer. Border Force experts suggested the smugglers may be cutting prices to open up new markets like the Albanians previously unable to afford the charges. MPs on the home affairs committee have also claimed that gangs may be exploiting the court-enforced delay in deportations of illegal migrants to Rwanda to persuade them to make the crossing now before the flights start. The disclosures come as another estimated 300 Channel … [Read more...] about ‘Summer sale’ for Channel migrants fuels record crossings

Pro-death penalty legislators demand hearing on Richard Glossip’s execution
More than 60 Oklahoma lawmakers—many of them Republicans who support the death penalty—are calling for a new evidentiary hearing in the case of Richard Glossip ahead of his upcoming execution. The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals set a September 22 execution date for Glossip , 59, after a federal judge rejected a challenge to the state's lethal injection protocol. But a group of 61 Oklahoma legislators—44 Republicans and 17 Democrats—have urged Oklahoma Attorney General John O'Connor to join their request for a new hearing, citing an independent investigation by a Texas law firm that raised concerns about Glossip's guilt and conviction. "The report concluded that no reasonable juror who heard all the evidence would find Mr. Glossip guilty," the legislators wrote in a letter to O'Connor last week. "As elected officials representing the citizens of this great state, we believe it is vitally important to conduct a serious review of this case so that the truth might be … [Read more...] about Pro-death penalty legislators demand hearing on Richard Glossip’s execution

How to get into football for fitness and fun from the women in the sport
With the Lionesses scoring freely through Euro 2022, it’s the driving force needed to get more women and girls involved in football in the UK. Sadly, females represent just 2% of people playing the sport, according to Jim Law of the Findaplayer website, which helps locate local teams and events. Reassuringly though, that number is expected to rise dramatically this year, with more than 6,500 active female-only or mixed games across the nation. Whether it’s on a competitive or social level, there are so many reasons to give football a go. Euro 2022 tournament sponsor Visa commissioned a report into women’s football, Women Thriving On And Off The Pitch, which showed that: Three quarters of those who play team sport say it has had a positive impact on their business life. Half of those who play a team sport say it helps them deal with stress, tiredness or being overworked. Visa ambassador Karen Carney MBE, who has 144 caps for England, says: ‘The biggest eye-opener … [Read more...] about How to get into football for fitness and fun from the women in the sport

Iota’s 2022 football preview: Bulldogs’ playoff hopes centered around confident defensive unit
What We Know Defense is going to be the calling card for the Iota Bulldogs this season. That’s not to say there won’t be high expectations for the Bulldogs’ offense, but it is without question the defensive unit is the strength of Iota’s team. The Bulldogs, who went 8-4 overall and advanced to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs a year ago, return all but one starter from a defensive unit that is led by all-state linebacker Dayton Boone. “We basically have everybody back except for one on defense,” Iota head football coach Ray Aucoin said. “We have 10 players that started back, but we also have about three or four players returning that received significant playing time on defense. So, we have some experience on the defensive side.” Among the position groups defensively that has Aucoin excited is the defensive line, not only because of the amount of depth, but the quality of the depth. “We’re going to be a traditional 4-3 defense,” Aucoin said. … [Read more...] about Iota’s 2022 football preview: Bulldogs’ playoff hopes centered around confident defensive unit
Smiley: Thoughts on idleness, Italian style
As I'm sure you've noticed, this column is designed for cool, youthful hipsters. But ever so often we hear from someone a bit older; say, around retirement age. Such a person is Duke Rivet, of Baton Rouge: "Now that I’m retired, people often ask me what I do. I always respond that I practice the 3 Ps religiously — Piddle, Putter and Procrastinate — which I have down to a science. "But recently I came across an Italian phrase which has a nice ring to it. "From now on, when asked about retirement, I’m going to say I’m indulging in the 'dolce far niente' — the 'sweetness of doing nothing.' "As Jackie Gleason was fond of saying, 'How sweet it is!'" Cost is relative Bob Hannan, of Marrero, makes an important point with his contribution to our "cheap food" stories: "Talking about low-cost food; I worked at the W.T. Grant store in Harvey in the summer of 1968. "Monday through Thursday's special at the luncheonette was all the fried chicken you could eat, with a salad, … [Read more...] about Smiley: Thoughts on idleness, Italian style
California Teen’s Disappearance Being Investigated As Abduction | The Daily Wire
A 16-year-old California teenager has gone missing in Northern California, and officials are now investigating the situation as an abduction. The teen was last seen at a large party at the campground after midnight on Saturday. The gathering included over 100 people, the sheriff’s office has said, and up to 250 people, who came all the way from the Bay Area, per organizers. The social event was advertised on social media sites, such as Snapchat, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Authorities have said they are investigating the disappearance as an abduction, but are also considering other possibilities. “We are treating her disappearance as an abduction right now because we have not been … [Read more...] about California Teen’s Disappearance Being Investigated As Abduction | The Daily Wire
