Wigan Athletic’s march to the League One title was close to being halted on Tuesday night when Darrell Clarke’s Bristol Rovers side put in one of their best performances of the season to hold the table toppers to a draw. And the outstanding performance of Rovers did not go unnoticed from the opposition dugout as Latics boss Paul Cook heaped praise on the home side after the 1-1 draw. Rovers looked set for a huge upset victory after Liam Sercombe scored the opener and the Gas went close on a couple of occasions, hitting the post through Kyle Bennett and Lee Brown, but Ryan Colclough rescued a point. After the match at the Memorial Stadium, talking to the official Wigan Athletic website , Cook said: “Bristol Rovers were excellent tonight, they played really well and they moved the ball well. Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook said he is expecting a tough test for his newly promoted side at Bristol Rovers tonight. Wigan secured promotion back to the Championship with a 4-0 win over Fleetwood Town on Saturday, and victory at the Memorial Stadium will give his side a chance to secure the League One title at home on Saturday. Talking about taking on Rovers to Wish FM at the Wigan Athletic Training Centre on Monday morning, the Latics boss said: "Bristol Rovers is always a tough place to go to and Darrell is a bright young manager who has had an outstanding time with his club so far. "There will be one or two changes from Saturday. We can't keep going with the same team Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday as this time of year. … [Read more...] about Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook talks Darrell Clarke, Bristol Rovers
Leam Richardson admitted the three points and clean sheet were the only two things that mattered about Wigan Athletic’s 1-0 victory over Rochdale. With seven changes to the side that knocked Manchester City out of the FA Cup five days earlier, Latics struggled to get into their rhythm against rock-bottom Rochdale. But they picked up all three points thanks to Michael Jacobs’ 12th-minute striker, which keeps them three points adrift of League One leaders Blackburn - with three games in hand. “The most pleasing thing was the three points, but a close second was another clean sheet,” acknowledged the Latics assistant boss. “The lads were putting their bodies on the line there, producing block after block, because they put us under a lot of pressure. “Credit to the lads for sticking at it, as we knew they would, and proving as resolute as ever. “It’s a saying in football, but your biggest game is always your next one. “It wasn’t … [Read more...] about Double reward for Wigan Athletic management
Paul Cook admits he had a rather novel – but hugely successful – way of ensuring Nick Powell remained a Wigan Athletic player on deadline day...he pinched his mobile phone! Latics were celebrating a real coup on Wednesday night when they managed to get to the 11pm cut-off still in possession of the former Manchester United man. Premier League outfit Brighton had two bids rejected for Powell, who told chairman David Sharpe he had no interest in leaving no matter what the offer. And boss Cook – who’d previously admitted his fears atlosing Powell – could not hide his delight, and relief, at keeping hold of every single one of his first-team pool, as well as adding Fleetwood striker Devante Cole. “Of course I’m delighted Nick’s still here,” Cook beamed. “Coming into every transfer window, at 99.9 per cent of clubs there’s always a danger of losing players. “That’s not necessarily your best player, a top player, … [Read more...] about Wigan Athletic manager’s dastardly ploy to keep Powell!
