I’m a bit dubious about what to write here, mainly because I’m of a nervous disposition. In life generally but especially when it comes to all matters Wigan Athletic. As football fans, we invest such a large part of our lives in our football club and the full range of emotions is never far away. We’ve been lucky to have been repeatedly jumping with glee on many occasions during the last two games. When you see the players reacting in exactly the same way, then you know we’re part of something truly special this year.Yet in that time honoured fashion, I feel duty bound to say...we haven’t won nothing yet! When we’ve had our blips, it has hurt me to the core.Even though I expected us to lose at Portsmouth, due to the circumstances of Paul Cook’s return, it still hurt to see us lose, and my mind started whirring as to all the negative permutations.Briefly back in third place and staring down the barrel at those ill-fated play-offs.I feel such a strong … [Read more...] about The 12th Man: Wigan Athletic fans have their say on another wonderful week!

What a crazy season it’s been...and there’s still a month of it still to go! The 4-1 midweek win at Rochdale took Wigan Athletic back to the top of the League One table. After weeks of playing catch-up with Blackburn and Shrewsbury, who at one point had played FOUR more games, Latics have returned to where they feel is their natural position.A run of six wins in the last seven matches coming at exactly the right time to crank up the pressure on their promotion rivals. In previous years, Latics would already have done enough to have secured promotion back to the Championship.Their tally of 86 points took Bolton up as runners-up in League One behind Sheffield United last term. It’s only one point shy of the 87 points that took Gary Caldwell’s Latics to the third-tier title two seasons ago.And Paul Cook’s men still have six games remaining! It beggars belief it may need as many as five more wins to mathematically get over the line. But that says everything about … [Read more...] about Talking football: Wigan Athletic getting closer after crazy campaign
Sam Morsy may not have made as much of a splash on international duty with Egypt over the past week or so. But the Wigan Athletic midfielder still has time to play his way into their thinking ahead of the World Cup, according to Leam Richardson.“Sam’s back in the group here, and it was a great experience for him to get away with Egypt – even though he didn’t get as many minutes as he would have liked,” acknowledged the Latics assistant boss. “Fingers crossed he can finish the season on a high and force himself into the plans for the World Cup.”Latics managed to win both games without their influential skipper – 3-0 at Walsall and 2-0 at Bury. And Richardson made sure that fact was known to the midfield enforcer on his return to the group. “I’ve been quick to remind Sam that the team’s been winning without him, don’t worry about that!” Richardson chuckled.“But seriously – and I’ve been lucky … [Read more...] about Wigan Athletic ‘will benefit from Morsy return’
The Easter weekend is always a pivotal period in the end-of-season shake-up. So says the well-worn ‘book of football cliches’.And while I ordinarily try to avoid cliches like the plague, I can’t help but feel the next few days or so will prove to be utterly decisive in the League One promotion race.Three into two just won’t go.Wigan Athletic, Shrewsbury Town and Blackburn Rovers won’t all be celebrating automatic promotion come early May.And despite all averaging over two points-per-game with less than a quarter of the campaign to go – a ridiculous situation if you think about it – one of those excellent sides will have to be content with a place in the play-offs.And after coming so close to automatic promotion, you can’t help but feel it would be an almost impossible taskto raise the troops for an extra two, hopefully three, games in the play-offs – with literally everything on the line.Cards on the table, Shrewsbury were one of my … [Read more...] about Talking football: ‘It’s up for grabs now’ for Wigan Athletic
Wigan Athletic have been charged by the Football Association after failing to prevent spectators encroaching on to the pitch in the aftermath of their FA Cup fifth-round victory over Manchester City last month. Will Grigg scored the only goal to send Paul Cook’s men into the quarter-finals, only to be beaten by Southampton a fortnight ago."Wigan Athletic have been charged for failing to ensure that no spectators or unauthorised persons encroached onto the pitch at the Emirates FA Cup match against Manchester City on Monday, February 19," an FA statement read."The club has until 6pm on Monday, April 9 to respond to the charge.”Earlier in the month, City were charged £50,000 by the FA after admitting they had failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion. … [Read more...] about Wigan Athletic charged by FA over pitch invasion
