Wigan Athletic has moved a step closer to foreign ownership with the Whelan family confirming the proposed sale of their shareholding to International Entertainment Corporation (IEC). Latics chairman David Sharpe says the sale of Wigan Athletic Holdings Limited to IEC - subject to Hong Kong Stock Exchange approval and EFL consent - represents ‘the next stage’ for all parties.“My family have owned the majority shareholding in Wigan Athletic Football Club since 1995,” said Sharpe, in a statement.“We are very proud of what we have achieved for the football club, our supporters, the town and the local community.“After several months of discussions, negotiations and due diligence, we have now agreed, in principle, to transfer the entire shareholdings of Wigan Athletic Holdings Limited, which owns the majority shareholding in the operating companies of Wigan Athletic Football Club and the DW Stadium, to International Entertainment Corporation (IEC), … [Read more...] about Wigan Athletic takeover moves step closer

This weekend’s FA Cup fourth-round tie between Wigan Athletic and West Ham will evoke memories of several recent and memorable Premier League encounters. And if Latics can reproduce the performance that did for fellow top-flight outfit Bournemouth in the last round, they have every chance of pulling off another shock. But would it actually be that much of a shock? While two divisions currently separate the two sides, they could well be competing on equal terms in the Championship next season. We know David Moyes will again make changes to his Hammers line-up, while Paul Cook will afford the competition maximum respect. Yes there were a few changes in the last round but, unlike in the League Cup and Checkatrade Trophy, it was a team sent out to win the game. Anyone thinking Wigan’s 2-2 draw in the first game against Bournemouth was a fluke would have been put right by the opening exchanges at the DW. “I bet Eddie Howe wishes one of his players would put a Wigan player … [Read more...] about Talking football: It’s Hammer time for Wigan Athletic!
“Put up or shut up” - that’s the message from Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook to any clubs considering a move for any of his star names. Saturday’s 3-1 victory at Plymouth means Latics are now five points clear at the top of League One with 19 matches to go. As well as popping up with goal number three, ‘Superman’ Dan Burn put in another imperious display at the back, with the likes of Nick Powell, Max Power and Sam Morsy also impressing. With just over a week to go before the transfer window slams shut, Latics fans will be keeping their fingers crossed all of the big-hitters stay put to help to finish the job of winning promotion. Cook, though, is taking a more pragmatic view. “I’m never worried about anything in football,” he told the Wigan Post. “If clubs want to come in for our players, they’re going to have to pay a lot of money to get them. “But players will come and go, like we saw with Lee Evans, and all you … [Read more...] about Cook ‘not worried’ about losing Wigan Athletic stars
Plymouth boss Derek Adams reckons Wigan Athletic should be playing one if not two divisions higher, despite running the League One leaders close at Home Park. The mid-table Pilgrims had gone into the game as the form team in the third tier, having won five and drawn three of their last eight games, and took an early lead through a Graham Carey penalty. However, Will Grigg levelled within two minutes, and further strikes from Gavin Massey, right on half-time, and Dan Burn at the three-quarter mark sent Latics five points clear at the summit. “I thought it was a good game,” assessed Adams. “There was a lot of good football between two very good sides. “We started the game very, grew into, and we scored obviously off the penalty kick. “That gave us the start we probably deserved. “Quickly after that, we lose a really poor goal. It goes through a lot of bodies and into the goal. “To lose a goal so quickly; that was hard to take. “We … [Read more...] about Wigan Athletic ‘far too good for League One’
