Scientist behind coronavirus vaccine given top medal named after Prince Albert

· March 5, 2021 ·

The scientist behind the Oxford/AstraZeneca coronavirus jab has been awarded a medal previously won by Winston Churchill. Professor Sarah Gilbert has been given the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) Albert Medal for her work on the vaccine. Prof Gilbert, who is lead researcher on the team, is Professor of Vaccinology in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at Oxford University. The RSA Albert Medal is awarded annually to recognise experts spearheading the solutions to “the challenges of our time”. Churchill scooped the gong in 1945 for leading the Allies to victory in the Second World War. Other past winners include Marie Curie for the discovery of radium; Alexander Graham Bell for inventing the telephone; Stephen Hawking for boosting awareness of physics; and Tim Berners-Lee for creating the World Wide Web. Prof Gilbert said: “It is a great honour to receive this award. “The creation and the development of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine came after I … [Read more...] about Scientist behind coronavirus vaccine given top medal named after Prince Albert

Another new coronavirus variant found in UK as 16 cases spark investigation

· March 4, 2021 ·

Sixteen cases of another new Covid variant have been found in the UK. The strain was identified by Public Health England and anyone who tested positive and their contacts have been tracked down and told to isolate. It shares a mutation in common with the South African and Brazilian variants and has been designated a 'Variant Under Investigation' - meaning that scientists aren't immediately worried about it. But the change it shares with the others, E484K, could help the virus avoid immunity from vaccinations or previous infection. It doesn't feature the N501Y mutation, present in all 'Variants Of Concern' currently being monitored. There are now a total of four VUIs and four VOCs currently being tracked in the UK. Mutations are a natural part of the life of all viruses - not just the novel coronavirus . But experts closely monitor changes to dangerous bugs like Covid-19 which has killed more than 2.4million worldwide, and over 118,000 in the UK. The mutations must … [Read more...] about Another new coronavirus variant found in UK as 16 cases spark investigation

Scientists believe they have discovered where asteroid which wiped out dinosaurs came from

· February 15, 2021 ·

Scientists think they may be a step closer to understanding where the asteroid or comet that wiped out the dinosaurs came from. The Chicxulub impactor smashed into the earth off the eastern shore of what is now Mexico, leaving a crater 100 miles across and 12 miles deep. It ended the reign of the dinosaurs - taking out three quarters of plant and animal life with them - about 66 million years ago. Experts from Harvard University in the US believe they have figured out how such a large chunk of extra terrestrial rock ended up spelling death for the giant reptiles. The gravity of the massive planet Jupiter draws comets from the icy outer edges of the solar system and hurtles them inwards, towards the sun. Advertisement As the comets slingshot around the sun, the gravitational power of the star breaks apart the cosmic missile. The resulting shards fly across the solar system - increasing the chance of a collision with planets like Earth. Who qualifies for the £500 working tax credits payment announced in the Budget

· March 5, 2021 ·

Rishi Sunak bowed to pressure to maintain the £20 a week Universal Credit uplift on Wednesday, but said due to operational factors, households in receipt of working tax credits would receive an alternative payment from April. Citing "operational" reasons, the Chancellor said working tax credit claimants will receive a one-off payment of £500 instead of the £80 a month boost. The new payment will replace the temporary increase in working tax credits which will end as planned on April 5. "To support low-income households, the Universal Credit uplift of £20 a week will continue for a further six months," Sunak told The Commons. The extension of the uplift means that claimants will receive an extra £20 a week between April 1 and September 30 on top of the standard allowance, which will rise to £324.84 a month for a single person. "We'll provide working tax credit claimants with equivalent support for the next six months," he added. "And because of the way that system works … [Read more...] about Who qualifies for the £500 working tax credits payment announced in the Budget
