‘I went to war – and came back with a dog’
If you had to leave your home and all your worldly belongings in an instant to run for your life, as thousands of Ukrainians have, what would you grab? Money, your passport, some spare clothes? For many Ukrainian families, the one thing they could not leave behind was their pets. Pictures have emerged of refugees carrying cats, dogs and birds as they rush to safety . But those animals that were abandoned roam the streets in search of food and love. One of these much-loved pets found me, while I was reporting in Ukraine, and I could not leave that dog behind. This is my story of how I came back from war with a friend for life, one who helped me cope with the reality of a warzone. Before I left Islington for Ukraine, I could have never imagined the experience. The stories of destruction I found are so devastating that I struggle to comprehend how this is happening in the 21st century. Genocide. War crimes. Invasion. Yet, when entering Ukraine back in February, … [Read more...] about ‘I went to war – and came back with a dog’

Russia-Ukraine war takes center stage at Davos World Economic Forum
Lush green meadows have replaced the familiar white blanket of snow as the Davos cohort makes a comeback to the scenic Swiss Alpine town after a hiatus of more than two years. The annual gathering of the rich and powerful that was forced into the virtual world by the COVID-19 pandemic returns in its physical form at a time when a devasting war in Ukraine and coronavirus outbreaks in China are stoking recession fears amid soaring prices, fueling steep increases in global hunger and poverty. "The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos this year will be the most timely and consequential annual meeting since the creation of the forum over 50 years ago,'' WEF founder Klaus Schwab told reporters ahead of the meeting. "The return of war, epidemics and the climate crisis, all those disruptive forces have derailed the global recovery," Schwab said. "Those issues must be confronted in Davos; the global food crisis, in particular, needs our immediate attention." John Sheridan saving Oldham from non-league in sixth spell at club – after SOS in Tesco
In Hollywood movie The Sixth Sense, poor old Bruce Willis keeps going to work every day as a psychologist without realising he's dead. To be fair, we've all carried on as normal after being shot in the stomach and not bothering to check for a pulse. But in a lower-budget thriller at Boundary Park, there has been a supernatural quality about returning legend John Sheridan's sixth sense as Oldham Athletic's saviour. After five previous spells as manager or caretaker, two of them ending in the sack, 'Shezza' simply could not disappear into the sunset and watch a club he genuinely loves drift out of the Football League. So far, in the transformation of a troubled season scarred by demonstrations against owner Abdallah Lemsagem with tennis balls, flares, pitch invasions and a coffin, the 'Shezzurrection' has yielded 11 points from five games. Let's hear it for the boys: Sheridan is back at Oldham ( Image: Manchester Evening News) Oldham are not out of the woods yet. … [Read more...] about John Sheridan saving Oldham from non-league in sixth spell at club – after SOS in Tesco
