Alarm over “ghost town” fears have set Aviemore businesses against Cairngorm Mountain owner Highland and Islands Enterprise, which they accuse of “abandoning the town to its unenviable fate”.A spokesman for Aviemore Business Association confirmed this week a survey of local business, which has been left reeling after a series of winter setbacks, had been carried out to establish a clearer picture of the problem facing the local snowsports and tourist economy. “It’s quite clear, from the evidence provided by 30 different businesses, that HIE are anonymous around here.“There were some soothing words when the funicular failed and some ‘talking shop’ meetings – and that has been that. Aviemore has now been abandoned to its unenviable fate.”One of the survey team, Alan Brattey, said: “Business owners were quite open in their condemnation and several asked why it wasn’t HIE which was going around and asking how it … [Read more...] about Aviemore businesses slate Highlands and Islands Enterprise over funicular railway fall-out

This Brexit debacle shows why Greater Manchester needs devolution now more than ever For almost three years now, we have watched in horror as Brexit has played out down in Westminster. Never before has there been such a strong case for devolution to Greater Manchester. First, the vote to leave the EU was linked to a disaffection with Westminster and the stark regional inequalities caused by central government policies. Greater Manchester is thriving relative to most UK cities. But when we look overseas, to cities like Munich or Lyon we see clear and tangible differences with our own city region. We don’t have control over our education and skills policies like many of these places do. We don’t even have much control over our transport network or funding for infrastructure like other major cities. And we’ve been subjected to successive failed central government experiments, which range from bus deregulation to local government austerity. Local government in Greater … [Read more...] about Opinion: Why Greater Manchester needs devolution now more than ever….
It seems extremely likely that there will be more collapses in the commercial airline sector, and more consolidation as weaker players get weeded out, says Loizos Heracleous. Yet another airline has collapsed – this time British operation Flybmi, costing almost 400 jobs as hundreds of flights were cancelled at short notice. It is the latest in a string of recent European airline failures, including Air Berlin, Alitalia, Monarch, Primera, Azur and Cobalt. This is despite years of good growth in worldwide air passenger demand, including in Europe. So why are so many airlines going out of business? Aviation is an unattractive industry from an investor point of view at the best of times, notwithstanding the passenger growth. Aeroplanes are expensive assets with few alternative uses, which limits the ability of airlines to reduce their capacity during lean periods – compared to, say, a manufacturing business that can close a plant and lay off workers. Airlines also have to … [Read more...] about Airlines are going bust in droves, so why do so many people try to launch them?
As a middle-aged chef who loves food and hates diets, it’s surprising that I am not overweight and currently feeling bad about failing to stick to a New Year’s resolution to lose a few pounds. My dietary intake is chaotic, largely due to the nature of my work – but also because I am weak willed and poorly disciplined. I have never cut carbs, reduced fat, written a healthy meal planner, or reached a point when I felt I had put too much butter in mashed potato. I regularly snack on Snickers, occasionally eat breakfast at McDonald’s, and caramel-based desserts are one of my favourite things. But somehow, despite all this, I am not fat. I should really be using this article to share my diet plan with the world, because it clearly holds a remarkable secret that everyone could learn from. Or perhaps not. In fact, the reason I am not overweight probably has more to do with my genetics than the food I eat. For many years it has been well known that our genes have a … [Read more...] about Failing to lose weight? It really could be down to your genes – and this is why
