There are plenty of reasons to be cheerful. But, of course, happiness doesn’t always follow logic Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton declared rather dramatically on social media this week that he ‘feels like giving up on everything’. He was down in the dumps because ‘the world is such a mess and people don’t seem to care’. Such a sentiment will strike a chord with many of us. Life is a struggle at times even before you start worrying about global poverty, climate change, Brexit, Trump, Syria etc. But if a young, healthy, talented multi-millionaire sports idol like Hamilton finds it tough, then it’s even harder for the rest of us. It is why it’s worth reminding ourselves that, in reality, life now has never been better. We’re living longer, we can cure or manage diseases that a generation ago were killers, there’s less poverty, we have more food and are better educated than ever before. Rich House, Poor House Rating: Million Dollar Wedding Planner Rating: Nobody keeps their housekeeping money in a tin on the kitchen shelf any more. Surely that habit ended about the time people stopped putting their false teeth into a bedside glass of water and thwacking carpets with a wicker beater in the park. But every episode of Rich House, Poor House (C5) begins with the home-swap families rushing to the breakfast table, where they prise open the tin and eagerly count the cash that has to last them for the week. Sian and Jason White had a pleasant surprise as they discovered a roll of £20 notes — more than £1,300 in total, which is not so much a household budget as a decent win on the Lottery. 'Mental!' said their six-year-old Oscar as he surveyed the heap of wealth with satisfaction. He wasn't smiling the next day after his parents allowed him and his big brother Jack, 13, to fill a shopping trolley with all the sweets and cakes they wanted. When a pharmaceutical company raised the price of an essential medicine to unacceptable levels, there was only one thing for pharmacist Marleen Kemper to do: start making it herself. When Kemper was in primary school, she had watched two of her classmates get ill. One had a brain tumour, the other contracted an infection in his gut. Both of them died. Kemper was about 10 at the time, and knew she did not want to see another friend perish. She told her parents she wanted to do something that would prevent others dying. She wanted to be a doctor. But training is hypercompetitive in the Netherlands, where Kemper grew up. She didn’t quite have the grades. She liked chemistry, so chose a career in pharmacy instead. She studied for six years and did a residency for another four. She is now a highly respected hospital pharmacist based at Amsterdam UMC’s Academic Medical Centre, a cavernous building crafted out of concrete on the south-east fringe of the Dutch capital.
