Russia reacts to Sweden and Finland nearing NATO membership
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned on Tuesday that Russia has plans in place to ensure the country's security in light of Sweden and Finland nearing NATO membership. As NATO's 30 members signed off on the accession protocols for Sweden and Finland, Peskov told reporters that Russia's Ministry of Defense is taking action. "Such options are being worked out not in the Kremlin, but in the Ministry of Defense. We have already said many times that there are relevant plans there, and work is being done to ensure our security," Peskov told a news conference when pressed on Russia's possible response. The spokesperson's remarks come as the NATO allies were set to formally approve the historic decision made during last week's NATO summit to invite Finland and Sweden to join the military alliance. The signing off on Sweden and Finland's accession protocols at NATO headquarters means their membership bids will now be sent for legislative approval. NATO Secretary General Jens … [Read more...] about Russia reacts to Sweden and Finland nearing NATO membership

Spain boosts military spending to close gap with NATO goal
Spain is increasing military spending as it works toward meeting a NATO commitment by dedicating 2% of gross domestic product to defense, the Spanish government said Tuesday. Cabinet members approved a one-off expenditure of almost 1 billion euros ($1 billion) for Spain's Defense Ministry that the government said was needed to cover unexpected expenses produced by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine . Spain has sent military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, and deployed more troops and aircraft to NATO missions in Eastern Europe. NATO leaders agreed at a summit held in Madrid last week to expand their efforts to get all alliance members up to the 2% of GDP mark. Currently, only nine of the Western military alliance's 30 members meet or surpass that goal. Spain pledged at a NATO summit held in Madrid last week that it would reach the 2% of GDP goal by 2029. That would mean doubling its budget for military spending from the current 13 billion euros ($13.4 billion) to … [Read more...] about Spain boosts military spending to close gap with NATO goal
Wimbledon hero Cameron Norrie does not support England when it comes to rugby union
Cameron Norrie might have had the backing of the Court no.1 crowd during his gruelling five-set victory over David Goffin, but the Wimbledon hero will not be cheering on his fellow Brits in the Rugby Union World Cup next autumn. The British no.1, 26, reached the semi-finals of a grand slam for the first time in his career after twice battling back from a set down to claim an astonishing 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over world no.58 Goffin. In a mammoth contest on Court no.1, Norrie became the first Brit to reach the last four since a certain Andy Murray in 2016 and will face six-time SW19 winner Novak Djokovic on Friday (July 7) for a place in the final. The Ukrainians are running out of time
Boris Johnson has declared that what Nato should be offering Ukraine is “deterrence by denial”. What he presumably meant is that Kyiv should be provided with sufficient weapons, intelligence and other support that Russia would never attack it again. Nato went a long way down that road at its summit in Madrid last week – but for its own benefit, not Ukraine’s. It promised heightened conventional security for Europe’s future defence, reassuring its Baltic and central European members and affording Sweden and Finland evidence of the benefits of membership. However, none of these states faces an imminent threat to its security from Russia. Ukraine, by contrast, is fighting for its life. Deterrence by denial will only be of use to it after the war is over. Russia was not deterred from invading and Ukraine is trying to win a conflict, not to prevent one. The best that Nato can achieve is a level of intra-war deterrence sufficient to prevent Russia escalating either with chemical and … [Read more...] about The Ukrainians are running out of time
Vladimir Putin has threatened nuclear war at least 35 times—U.K.’s Johnson
Russian President Vladimir Putin has made dozens of nuclear threats since the start of the war in Ukraine but they should only be seen as "saber-rattling," British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said. In an interview on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Madrid, Spain, Johnson told British radio station LBC on Thursday that Putin was seeking to shift his invasion of Ukraine into a fight with the alliance. When asked about the view by the former U.K. ambassador to Washington Kim Darroch that NATO needed to be ready for a nuclear strike, Johnson replied: "There's an analysis that I think has been done by somebody recently, a think tank, that they're looking at about 35 mentions or perhaps it's a little bit more now." Johnson did not mention the think tank in question and Newsweek has contacted the press office of Number 10 Downing Street for clarification. Soon after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February, Putin did raise alarm in the West when … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin has threatened nuclear war at least 35 times—U.K.’s Johnson
