Elon Musk has stepped up his campaign against working from home by targeting Tesla staff who fail to turn up often enough with automated demands for an explanation. The carmaker is tracking how many times its workers swipe into offices and sending messages to those who do not swipe enough warning that all staff are expected in the office during normal working hours. The Telegraph has seen a screenshot of an email sent to staff which says: “You are receiving this email because there is no record of you using your badge to enter a Tesla facility on at least 16 days over the 30-day period ending on June 28. “As a reminder, all employees are expected to be back in the office, full-time.” Staff receiving such emails must send an explanation of their absence to line managers and also to a central monitoring point. Posts on the Blind workplace discussion forum from Tesla staff suggest the new policy is proving unpopular. One said: “This feels wrong. Plans For New Semiconductor Factories Across America Hit Major Roadblock | The Daily Wire
Major projects to increase the United States’ manufacturing capacity for semiconductors have been put on hold as supporting legislation has been delayed in Congress . Many Asian economies implemented harsh lockdown measures in response to COVID, creating bottlenecks in the global semiconductor supply chain . As a result, American consumers and businesses have faced a shortage of products that require computer chips. Some automotive companies, for example, have been forced to limit or pause production, worsening inflationary pressures as vehicle prices surge at the highest rate in decades. In response, lawmakers proposed the $52 billion CHIPS for America Act. However, because the funding has not yet reached chipmakers, Intel, TSMC, and GlobalFoundries issued “public warnings” that they might “scale back their plans to make semiconductors” in the United States, according to the Department of Commerce . Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, for example, said at a recent panel event … [Read more...] about Plans For New Semiconductor Factories Across America Hit Major Roadblock | The Daily Wire

Pope Francis has hinted he may resign if his health continues to deteriorate. Speculation of an imminent resignation has been growing since the 85-year-old was forced to cancel his trip to Africa after doctors warned he needed rest after a knee injury. Pope Francis , who is Bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church, said it was "a painful thing for me not to be able to do this trip" after wanting to promote peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. Rumours surrounding the pope's future were fuelled by a sudden decision to call the meeting of cardinals, a formal meeting to elect a new pope at the end of August, and a visit to L'Aquila in Italy which is associated with Pope Celestine V who resigned the papacy in 1294. Twitter down: Some users unable to access site, forced to look at dog instead
Twitter appears to have broken, for some of its users. They were instead forced to look at picture of a dog sitting on a chair, and were told there is “nothing to see here”. The site offered a link to click on, which suggested it might be a way of fixing the problem. But it appeared to simply take users back to the homepage – and showed them that same poodle again. Twitter’s dog appeared to be a new addition: usually, the site shows a more standard error page. For a long time it was famous for another animal – the “fail whale” – that appeared when the site was hit by the common outages that affected its early years.
