MARGARET BRENNAN, CBS NEWS: Today on FACE THE NATION: a week of hits and misses for the Trump administration, as the North Koreans vow complete denuclearization following their summit with the South Koreans. At a rally last night in Michigan, the president had a hard time trying to downplay expectations of his upcoming meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) DONALD TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: I'm not going to give you what's going to actually happen, because we don't really know. AUDIENCE: Nobel! Nobel! The US seems to be going down a dangerous path where a handful of voices in the mainstream media dictate what “should” matter, and events of global importance are shunned in favor of anything that involves Trump or Russia. A recent Gallup poll noted that Americans are losing confidence in mainstream media. As technology advances, so does knowledge. We are witnessing a greater capacity to achieve global knowledge than any generation before us. In the United States and Europe, media outlets such as CNN and the BBC have eyes and ears all over the world. Reporters are provided stories of victories, triumph amidst adversity, and genocidal … [Read more...] about Racing toward ignorance: Why are Trump & Russia all we ever hear about in the media today?
IT was late one Saturday night in June 2017 when news broke about a terror attack on London Bridge. The immediate details were fuzzy and frightening. Social networks were bombarded with the usual mix of messages – accurate reports, heated opinions, along with rumours and speculation. But a different conversation was happening on one extreme corner of the internet. The “Politically Incorrect” or /pol/ section of anarchic message board 4chan was buzzing with disinformation campaigns, calls for race war, and fake pictures of “victims” and “suspects”. They had a political point. They blamed ordinary Brits, “leftists”, immigrants and mainstream Islam for the attack, pointing fingers at nearly everyone, it seemed, other than the murderous terrorists. “You voted for this,” said one. Another chimed in in ALL CAPS: “REMEMBER THAT THIS IS WHAT LIBTARDS WANT FOR AMERICA.” As people lay dying in the streets, the … [Read more...] about Why white nationalists are spreading conspiracy theories that Trump is being controlled by the “deep state” and the chemical attack in Syria didn’t happen
The U.S. intelligence community has concluded there is no doubt the Russians meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, leaking stolen e-mails and inflaming tensions on social media. While Congress and special counsel Robert Mueller investigate Russian interference, including whether the campaign of Donald Trump colluded with Russia, we have been looking into another vector of the attack on American democracy: a sweeping cyber assault on state voting systems that U.S. intelligence tied to the Russian government. Tonight, you'll find out what happened from the frontline soldiers of a cyberwar that was fought largely out of public view, on digital battlegrounds in states throughout the country. The first shots were fired here in Illinois, not far from downtown Springfield, in a nondescript shopping center, the kind you'll find anywhere in the United States. There, in a repurposed supermarket, is the headquarters of the Illinois State Board of Elections. Bill Whitaker: This doesn't … [Read more...] about When Russian hackers targeted the U.S. election infrastructure
