Minute by minute – here’s what an Indian takeaway curry does to your body in just one hour
IT’S Saturday night and you’re looking forward to the arrival of your Indian takeaway curry. Fast-forward a couple of hours and you’re feeling content, but bloated and potentially in agony from heartburn. Indian food is not necessarily unhealthy, but like any cuisine in a takeaway form, it’s indulgent. Dietician Helen Bond told The Sun: “Some takeaway portion sizes are double what you would typically serve at home and a fat -drenched pilau can easily push up the calorie content even further. “Curries like tikka masala cooked in creamy sauces are the highest in calories. “Masala is usually made with cream and ground almonds, so consuming large portions can ramp up your calorie intake. Liz Truss ‘misinterpreted’ over ‘no handouts’ remark, her supporters say
Liz Truss was not ruling out future cost of living support when she said she would reject "handouts", her supporters have said, with prominent backer Penny Mordaunt claiming the comments were "misinterpreted". Leadership rival Rishi Sunak attacked the comments saying the foreign secretary needs to "get real", while claiming her plan to cut taxes immediately will do little to help the most vulnerable. But Penny Mordaunt , who is backing Ms Truss to become the next prime minister after her own leadership bid failed, claimed on Sky News that her remarks had been "misinterpreted". Ms Truss told the Financial Times that as prime minister she would "look at what more can be done" to help families facing spiralling fuel bills. But she added: "The way I would do things is in a Conservative way of lowering the tax burden, not giving out handouts." Archie Battersbee: A mother’s fight for her son
It's easy to see why Archie loved MMA. Fighting ran in his blood. His mother, Hollie Dance had vowed to "fight until the bitter end," and even the morning after losing her final legal bid to continue his life support treatment, she held her coffee cup tight and told me about the plans she has to keep going. "I'm not the type to sit and cry," she said. "I've always been on the move. Do you know I drive 40,000 miles a year for my kids?" I don't doubt her. Except for one day when I saw her in slippers, Hollie has always been in running shoes. Ready. The single mother and former dancer worked seven days a week to make sure her children were fed and raised well. "I had to pay their own father to babysit them," she said. "I did everything I could to support them with their passions; Archie's MMA, Lauren's (Archie's sister) passion for horses, Tom (brother) with his boxing." 'It's too soon - people get longer for broken bones' Our first encounter was in Court 44 at the start … [Read more...] about Archie Battersbee: A mother’s fight for her son
Archie Battersbee’s family slam hospital over ‘horrendous experience’ after ‘barbaric’ death

Archie Battersbee’s family vow to call for change following 12-year-old’s death
The family of Archie Battersbee have called for a review to be held following the young boy's death, saying they want "something good to come out of this tragedy". The 12-year-old, who had been in a coma since April, died in the Royal London Hospital on Saturday after weeks of legal wrangling resulted in his life-sustaining treatment being stopped. He was being kept alive by a combination of medical interventions, including ventilation and drug treatments. Doctors treating Archie for the last four months declared him as "brain-stem dead" but his family had argued for his life support treatment to continue in the hope he would eventually recover. His parents had made bids to the High Court, Court of Appeal and European Court of Human Rights to have him transferred to a hospice to die, but these were all rejected. Now, Archie's family have vowed to call for "change" to ensure nobody else goes through such a "horrendous experience". "We want something good to come out … [Read more...] about Archie Battersbee’s family vow to call for change following 12-year-old’s death

What Immigration Attorneys Are Telling Their Clients Now: ‘Brace Yourselves’
Immigration lawyers are dealing with a lot right now: large caseloads, court challenges, regulations in dispute. One of the most significant things in flux is the Flores settlement agreement, the 1997 consent decree that has governed the conditions under which migrant children can be detained. Among other things, a 2015 interpretation of that agreement calls on the government to release children into family custody or a licensed program after 20 days. On August 21, the Trump administration announced a rule change to Flores that would lift the 20-day cap and expand family detention. Nineteen states and the District of Columbia have challenged the change in court, and it must still be reviewed by U.S. District Judge Dolly M. Gee, in California, before it goes into effect. For lawyers working with detained migrants, the result is profound uncertainty. One of those lawyers is Hardy Vieux, who leads the legal work of Human Rights First, an advocacy group that provides legal … [Read more...] about What Immigration Attorneys Are Telling Their Clients Now: ‘Brace Yourselves’
