This is a story about a horrific massacre and a death row inmate's claims of innocence. Kevin Cooper's case has drawn worldwide attention, including from Pope Francis and Kim Kardashian West. The heartbreaking story about the brutal assault that left four dead and one young survivor in Chino Hills, Calif., also raises questions about the initial police investigation, the loss of key evidence, and whether someone else is actually the killer. "Nearly 20 years ago, I got a stack of letters from an inmate at San Quentin Prison," "48 Hours" correspondent Erin Moriarty reports. "His name is Kevin Cooper – and he wrote that he had been framed, as he put it, 'for something that I didn't do.'" Moriarty and "48 Hours" began exploring the case, the investigation, and Cooper's claims of innocence when she got the letters, and her reporting continues to this day. In 1983, someone brutally murdered Doug and Peggy Ryen, their daughter Jessica, 10, and a family friend, Christopher Hughes, 11. … [Read more...] about Kevin Cooper case: Was the wrong man convicted in the 1983 Chino Hills massacre?
Why does high blood pressure cause nose bleeds
A BRAVE teen whose face is almost entirely covered with a massive tumour says she refuses to let it stop her doing the things she loves. 14-year-old Esmee was born with a fairly common strawberry birthmark on her face. Doctors soon discovered, however, that the mark was a symptom of arteriovenous malformation (AVM) - an abnormal connection between arteries and veins. The pressure on some of her veins has caused them to swell into varicose veins. That's happened in Esmee's face, and as she's grown older, a benign tumour has grown over her chin, mouth and nose. Despite her condition, Esmee enjoys doing the kinds of things other teenage girls love. She's a keen horse rider and she loves socialising with her mates. Esmee said: “I want people to know about it. I'm just a normal 14-year-old girl who does things like anyone else.” At school, the main difference is that Esmee gets to leave class five minutes early to avoid anyone bumping into her. Due to her tumour’s soft … [Read more...] about Girl’s ‘birthmark’ grows into giant tumour engulfing her chin, mouth and nose
From murderers to paedophiles, armed robbers to fraudsters, and rapists to violent thugs - in 2018, WalesOnline's reporters covered court cases that saw more than 500 people taken off Wales' streets. A criminal justice system that is open and transparent is a crucial part of how democracy works. Our courts are based on the premise that justice has not only to be done, but seen to be done. So in 2019, we'll continue to devote time, efforts and expertise to make sure what happens in our courtrooms remains visible and accountable to the public. This is a month-by-month list of those locked up in Wales in 2018. January Calvin Dawe and Kirsty Hodgson Dawe brandished a six-inch knife at takeaway staff while his girlfriend Hodgson pocketed cash from the till in a late night knifepoint armed robbery. The pair, who were drunk when they robbed Bite Spice in Bridgend last year, laughed and shouted in the dock as they were sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court . Produced by Clare Friedland, Lourdes Aguiar, Elena DiFiore and Shoshanah Wolfson [This story previously aired on July 15, 2017. It was updated on Dec. 29, 2018.] Matt Herren still struggles to make sense of what happened the night of Oct. 12, 2012, when his close friend, Ryan Poston, was killed. "I think about him every day," Herren said. "You don't think something like that is ever going to happen to someone you know." "Is there something I could've done that could've prevented that? And I know a lot of people in his life had to have felt the same way," Herren told "48 Hours" correspondent Peter Van Sant. How did things spiral so out of control between Ryan and his girlfriend, Shayna Hubers, that she shot him to death -- insisting it was to protect herself? "What was lost when your friend was shot and killed?" Van Sant asked Herren. "He's the type of person that you want in your life," he replied. "Not just a friend, but a loving son, a protective, adoring older brother." "He had … [Read more...] about New murder trial for Shayna Hubers: Why did she shoot Ryan Poston six times?
