Why built the great wall of china
FORGET China - travellers heading to Croatia on holiday can enjoy its version of the Great Wall, the Walls of Ston. Found in Dalmatia in the south of Croatia, the walls were originally built to protect the city of Ston in the 14th century. They were built after Ston became part of the Republic of Dubrovnik, and were used to defend the Republic. While not quite as well know, the Walls of Ston are actually the second longest defensive walls in the world - after the Great Wall of China. It measures just 5km in length now, compared to the 21,196km of the Chinese.. The wall originally measured around 7km, with a height between five and ten metres, although part of the wall collapsed following a number of earthquakes, according to the Ston Tourist Board. The resemblance between the two walls has led to the Walls of Ston being referred to as the "European Wall of China". ONE of Donald Trump's most famous campaign pledges was to construct a "great, great wall" on America's southern border with Mexico. Designs have been revealed but with questions over funding and congressional support for the project, will Trump ever see the "big, beautiful wall" he promised his supporters? Why does Trump want to build the wall? During his presidential campaign, Trump promised supporters he would take a hard stance on immigration and build a giant wall on the country's southern border. In controversial speeches, he branded Mexicans "rapists" and "criminals" who were bringing problems into the United States. The policy proved popular with voters in some heartland Republican areas as Trump unexpectedly swept into the … [Read more...] about Is Donald Trump building the wall, what will the US-Mexico border look like, who’s paying for it and how much will it cost?
Dennis Wagner azcentral.com | USA TODAY NETWORK Published 11:06 PM EDT Mar 27, 2018 ON THE U.S.-MEXICO BORDER — There is no wall here. There is no fence, either. There are no agents or drones or surveillance towers. Only a river and a breeze. We wade into the Rio Grande at a place called Boquillas Canyon, mud squishing between toes, midway through a nearly 2,000-mile journey. By car, by foot, and foremost by helicopter, we are here to see every inch of the U.S.-Mexico boundary. Our mission is to film the border, evaluate the existing fences, document this invisible line as it exists in 2017 — before any construction begins on what President Donald Trump has repeatedly called “a big, beautiful wall.” So far, we have followed this river from its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico. The Rio Grande undulates along more than half of the U.S.-Mexico boundary. Border agents have patrolled it for years, sometimes risking their lives to enforce … [Read more...] about A 2,000-mile journey in the shadow of the border wall
UNESCO is a key part of the United Nations and aims to promote peace through educational, scientific and cultural reforms. The US has said it is leaving the group in December over what they described as anti-Israel bias. Here's everything you need to know about Unesco. What is Unesco? Unesco, or The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation, is a special agency within the UN (United Nations). After the UN was founded in 1943, Ministers of Education from China, The UK, US and USSR came together to agree that the world needed to establish an educational and cultural organisation. Unesco was created in 1945 with the firm belief that, forged by two world wars in less than a generation, political and economic alliances were not enough to build world peace. In this sense, peace must be established on the basis of humanity and our moral and intellectual solidarity to one another. It is from this understanding that Unesco's mission can be truly understood: … [Read more...] about What is Unesco, what are World Heritage sites and when was the UN agency formed?
