BBC election gaffe as Emily Maitlis mistakes Boris Johnson’s protection officer for Chancellor Sajid Javid

· December 13, 2019 ·

EMILY Maitlis was left red-faced today after mistaking Boris Johnson's protection officer for Chancellor Sajid Javid. The veteran journalist was speaking over footage showing the newly elected Prime Minister emerging from the door of No.10, waving to the crowds. "There he goes," she tells viewers who have tuned into the live BBC coverage. "Sajid Javid Chancellor, Boris Johnson... jumping into....". The searing Prince Andrew interviewer had mistook Johnson's bodyguard - a bald-headed man at his side - for the Chancellor. Maitlis soon realised her error, mumbling: "Sorry that was not Sajid Javid that was a very quick look at that." 'STONKING WIN' It was a long night for journalists as the third election in five years saw Johnson romping to a 363 seat victory. As Maitlis made the gaffe, the Prime Minister was setting off to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen after his landslide victory. He arrived at Buckingham Palace just before 11am where he met with the Queen and was invited to form a … [Read more...] about BBC election gaffe as Emily Maitlis mistakes Boris Johnson’s protection officer for Chancellor Sajid Javid

What happens with Brexit after Boris Johnson’s victory?

· December 13, 2019 ·

Prime Minister Boris Johnson recorded a resounding victory in the UK snap election and cleared the way for his version of the Brexit divorce deal. Backed by an absolute majority, Johnson is likely to once again present the exit bill to the House of Commons in the coming weeks. The assembly is virtually guaranteed to vote for the proposal and allow the UK to leave on January 31. Thus, the UK will officially be out of the EU — but the messy divorce procedure will be far from over. Read more: Opinion: Boris wins, but the UK loses Britain headed to another cliff edge? By leaving under the agreed terms, the UK would have triggered a transitional period set to expire by the end of 2020. During this time, ties between London and Brussels would be regulated by the divorce deal. However, the two sides would still need to hammer out a long-term trade relationship before the deadline expires. If they do not agree on terms before the year's end, the UK would once again face a cliff edge … [Read more...] about What happens with Brexit after Boris Johnson’s victory?

The police watchdog, scorned ex-wife and nagging questions over his morals: Boris Johnson’s complicated personal life, starting with a probe into his relationship with a US businesswoman, could make getting Brexit done look like child’s play

· December 13, 2019 ·

Boris Johnson took a well-deserved victory lap this morning, having crossed the finish line victorious in the most dramatic general election for a generation, securing him  a majority of close to 80 seats and a Labour Party crushed so convincingly its leader resigned before dawn. The newly re-elected PM will be drawing breath for the five-year marathon ahead. But the road is beset with obstacles of his own making, mostly linked to his turbulent love life. A police probe into his relationship with American businesswoman Jennifer Arcuri and grants handed to her company while he was London mayor may be the most concerning. However, thrown into the mix is his impending divorce from second wife Marina Wheeler and his future with the new lady by his side, Carrie Symonds. So, which of Boris's countless personal problems may prove a stumbling block to his premiership? Mayor: Johnson, then Mayor of London and MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip at Downing Street on May 11, … [Read more...] about The police watchdog, scorned ex-wife and nagging questions over his morals: Boris Johnson’s complicated personal life, starting with a probe into his relationship with a US businesswoman, could make getting Brexit done look like child’s play

PIERS MORGAN: Boris Johnson’s triumph proves democracy-denying radical socialists backed by self-righteous celebrities on Twitter are electoral poison – and if Democrats fall for the same delusion, Trump will decimate them in 2020

· December 13, 2019 ·

'What an earthquake we have created!' cried a jubilant Boris Johnson after his stunning UK election triumph last night. Unusually, the British Prime Minister wasn't either wildly exaggerating or speaking with forked tongue. Johnson's victory was a genuinely seismic moment, and one whose forceful tremors will be felt most keenly across the Atlantic in America. Because make no mistake, the lessons from this election carry extraordinary pertinence for next year's US election. Like Donald Trump and his 'Make America Great Again' mantra in 2016, Boris Johnson won with one very simple message that he rammed home every minute of every day of the six-week campaign. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his girlfriend Carrie Symonds arrive in Downing Street on Friday morning after the Conservative Party was returned to power in the General Election with an increased majority 'GET BREXIT DONE!' he bellowed ad nauseum, and this relentless three-word mission statement worked spectacularly well. … [Read more...] about PIERS MORGAN: Boris Johnson’s triumph proves democracy-denying radical socialists backed by self-righteous celebrities on Twitter are electoral poison – and if Democrats fall for the same delusion, Trump will decimate them in 2020

Aside from Brexit, what else will Boris Johnson’s government ‘get done’?

· December 13, 2019 ·

Boris Johnson now has a bigger majority than any Conservative prime minister since Margaret Thatcher. He is not a new prime minister but he is, for the first time, an election-winning prime minister – and can govern accordingly. For the first four months of his premiership Johnson was a man in a hurry, racing to get through the same stages of Brexit that Theresa May took three years to attempt. Like May, Johnson negotiated a deal with the EU. Like May, he failed in his attempts to get that deal through parliament. Unlike May, he used the ongoing challenge of parliamentary arithmetic to successfully persuade the electorate to hand him the majority he asked for to get Brexit done. He now returns to 10 Downing Street in a very different situation. With a considerable majority, he can look forward to a full five years in post. He can be sure of making progress over Brexit and will be confident that he can win parliamentary votes on a whole range of other policies. The opposition … [Read more...] about Aside from Brexit, what else will Boris Johnson’s government ‘get done’?
