Boris Johnson was battling to save his premiership on Tuesday night after two of his most senior Cabinet ministers resigned within 10 minutes of each other . First Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, and then Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, published letters on their Twitter accounts explaining why they could not remain in their posts . Mr Johnson scrambled to fill the gaps on the front bench even as further resignations from government positions were announced. Nadhim Zahawi, the Education Secretary, was named as the new Chancellor . It is understood Mr Johnson and Mr Zahawi agreed on the need for tax cuts to secure growth in their one-on-one meeting on Tuesday night. Michelle Donelan, the universities minister, will replace Mr Zahawi as Education Secretary, while Steve Barclay, the Downing Street chief of staff , was appointed to replace Mr Javid as Health Secretary. But four parliamentary private secretaries and a Tory vice-chairman followed Mr Javid and Mr Sunak out … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson hanging by a thread as Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid walk out

Tory vice chair RESIGNS live on TalkTV as pressure piles on embattled Boris Johnson
TORY vice chair Bim Afolami quit live on TV tonight as Boris Johnson faces the biggest leadership crisis of his premiership. The MP for Hitchin and Harpenden backed calls for the PM to stand down after Rishi Sunak sensationally quit as chancellor and Sajid Javid resigned as health secretary. Speaking to TalkTV after the resignations of the two senior Cabinet members , Mr Afolami said he too would have to step down from his position. The MP said: "After recent allegations about the former deputy chief whip and other things that have happened over recent weeks, I just don't think the Prime Minister any longer has, not just my support, but he doesn't have, I don't think, the support of the party, or indeed the country any more. "I think for that reason he should step down." Mr Afolami said he was "probably not" the party's vice chairman "after having said that". What happens now for Boris Johnson – and will he survive as Prime Minister?
Ten days ago Boris Johnson said he was mulling a third term until the mid-2030s. Now Tory MPs are questioning if he’ll survive the summer after the brutal resignations of his Chancellor and Health Secretary. Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid published their scathing letters nine minutes apart, just as the PM was due to summon a meeting of his loyalists. It comes after the Prime Minister was accused of lying about whether he knew of allegations against the Tory MP Chris Pincher, who has denied a series of allegations dating back over the last decade. For many Conservatives, how No10 dealt with the claims has been the final straw after months of questions about the PM’s integrity. Boris Johnson clings on to power as Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resign and lay into his leadership in savage letters
BORIS Johnson was last night clinging on after the shock walkouts of Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid. Mr Sunak told him the public expects government to be “conducted properly”. It came after the PM admitted he had “forgotten” a warning about grope-scandal Tory MP Chris Pincher . Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid launched an astonishingly brutal attack on the PM with two savage resignation letters yesterday. Javid stuck the knife in first — quitting as Health Secretary — followed moments later by Chancellor Sunak in an unprecedented attempt at a double takedown. Mr Sunak was livid that today’s massive National Insurance cut was being overshadowed by No10’s “lack of focus, grip and competence” after months of rolling scandals. More info Boris Johnson has been hit by a raft of resignations after it emerged the Prime Minister appointed Tamworth MP Chris Pincher to a key welfare role in Government despite being aware of specific allegations of sexual assault made against him. Downing Street claimed the Prime Minister was unaware of allegations in a briefing last Friday but eventually conceded Mr Johnson forgot about the allegations after ex-Foreign Office permanent under-secretary Lord Simon McDonald described Number 10’s earlier claim as “inaccurate”. Clearly, we’ve expected too much of Boris Johnson on the Chris Pincher scandal
Where do they think it’s going to end, all this? What do they, by which I mean all of the other members of the government, think is going to be the outcome for them? Johnson is finished, they must know that. And yet, on they all go, day after day, week after week, publicly humiliating themselves in defence of a man who they must surely know would never, ever do the same for them, and from whom no good, now, is ever going to come? Dominic Raab does not come across as a man who, in his private moments, has an especially deep reservoir of Zen-like calm to call upon. What is he saying to himself, to his friends? What are the voices in his head shouting at him when he gets to the end of yet another agonising humiliation on the TV channels and radio stations, doing his level best to style out the absurd lies of a man who, he must surely know by now, is not telling him the truth? Even by Raab’s incomparably low standards, Tuesday morning’s efforts were off-the-scale … [Read more...] about Clearly, we’ve expected too much of Boris Johnson on the Chris Pincher scandal
Boris Johnson to face questions on ‘integrity in politics’ after MP groping claims and partygate
Boris Johnson will face questions from the powerful Liaison Committee on Wednesday in the wake of another scandal. A few hours after what could be a bruising Prime Minister's Questions, the PM is set to be quizzed on a range of topics, including "integrity in politics", the rule of law, and Ukraine and its impacts on the UK, the rising cost of living and the government's response. MPs on the committee, who are chairs of Commons committees, will likely ask him about the appointment of Chris Pincher as deputy chief whip after he quit last week and was then suspended from the party. Partygate is also likely to crop up. Boris Johnson 'exposed' by explosive letter on Pincher scandal - Politics live Advertisement Mr Pincher admitted he "drank far too much" last week and is now seeking professional medical help as he faces allegations of groping two men, including an MP. Mr Johnson was firstly criticised over his delay in suspending the … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson to face questions on ‘integrity in politics’ after MP groping claims and partygate
I wouldn’t put anything past Boris Johnson – he may stay, he may go, he may just run for the hills
Maybe, in hindsight, the clues were there. Maybe, if you look again at those pictures from round the cabinet table on Tuesday morning, the entire government looking like they’ve Abba hologrammed in from the realm of the undead, then you might be able to see that there would only be a matter of hours to go. But then again, are there really only hours to go? It’s only the chancellor and the health secretary that have resigned. Of course this should be the end for Boris Johnson but that particular formulation has reached almost proverb-like status these days. Can anyone be sure it will ever happen? Who, at this point, would bet against Johnson actively trying to run the country from some kind of gold-wallpapered bivouac in the woods while on the run from law enforcement, carving lies about how many hospitals he’s going to build into the bark of trees, Nadine Dorries scurrying along after him, dutifully scooping up his turds and burying them in shallow graves? If … [Read more...] about I wouldn’t put anything past Boris Johnson – he may stay, he may go, he may just run for the hills
