Sir Ralph Halpern, the businessman, who has died aged 83, was the colourful chief executive of the Burton Group during the 1980s who turned the ailing tailor into a “multi-niche” high-street retailing group valued at £1.6 billion; to tabloid readers, however, he was the “Bonking Burton Boss” who featured in a notorious kiss-and-tell story that painted him as a “five-times-a-night” stallion. From making a loss of £100 million in 1977, the Burton Group, as it became, went to pre-tax profits of more than £180 million in 1987. It owned Topshop, Topman, Topgirl, Dorothy Perkins, Evans, Principles, Harvey Nichols, Debenhams, employed 35,000 staff at some 2,000 outlets and had interests in property and credit cards. At one time £1 in every £8 spent on clothes in Britain were spent at Burton Group stores. A dapper, twitchy figure in his Burton suit, 5ft 10in tall and a mere 12 stone – “10 stone without his wallet,” his minder remarked – Halpern led the company in unquestionably virile … [Read more...] about Sir Ralph Halpern, flamboyant chief of the Burton Group who built it into a “multi-niche” retail empire – obituary

Patient outrage as NHS is blocked from supplying Covid drug to vulnerable patients who are not protected by vaccines
Health chiefs were condemned last night after refusing to approve a drug that protects vulnerable patients – including those with blood cancer – who don’t respond to Covid vaccines. Ministers were poised to roll out the medication Evusheld last month, having been urged to by NHS specialists. But on Friday, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) announced there was ‘insufficient data’ that the drug provided long-lasting protection against the Omicron variant, and asked the health regulator the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence to investigate. It isn’t expected to give guidance until next April. Doctors reacted in fury, arguing that multiple studies have proven that Evusheld – developed by AstraZeneca and also known as cilgavimab – is effective at preventing hospitalisation and death from Covid. Data also shows it holds up against newer variants, such as Omicron. NHS doctors wanted to start treating vulnerable patients with Evusheld, which … [Read more...] about Patient outrage as NHS is blocked from supplying Covid drug to vulnerable patients who are not protected by vaccines
5 Chelsea stars who had forgotten spells at other English clubs as Fulham chase Willian
Chelsea have spent the better part of the last two decades at the pinnacle of English football - and players have made great names for themselves at Stamford Bridge. From Frank Lampard to Didier Drogba, the Blues boast a litany of superstars. And with so many players synonymous with their time in west London, spells at other English sides can easily be forgotten. And as Willian could be set for a switch to Fulham , Daily Star Sport is looking at five players who stared at Chelsea, but also had forgettable spells at other sides in the English footballing pyramid. Eidur Gudjohnsen - Stoke City When Eidur Gudjohnsen arrived at the Britannia Stadium in 2010 it would have seemed like a blast from the past for the Potters. For a few free-wheeling years at the turn of the millennium, Stoke were owned by an Icelandic consortium and plenty of Nordic talent called the side home. Gudjohnsen's spell wasn't quite the blast from the past they were hoping for, and he only made four … [Read more...] about 5 Chelsea stars who had forgotten spells at other English clubs as Fulham chase Willian
Dad restrains woman who stripped on flight and told him about ‘explosion’
A brave dad took control of a woman claiming to be a terrorist on a flight full of families. The woman terrified Jet2 passengers when she allegedly stripped down to her underwear and tried to storm the plane’s cockpit twice while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’. She reportedly said there ‘would be an explosion’ and asked the children she was with if they were ‘ready to die’. The suspect, believed to be in her 30s, also reportedly said her parents were part of the infamous terror group ISIS. Phillip O’Brien, 35, was one of the passengers on the flight travelling from Cyprus to Manchester. He was with six members of his family, including his wife and three children. ‘As you can imagine everyone was s****ing themselves,’ he told The Mirror . Phillip, who used to work in security as a teenager, asked staff why no one had ‘put [the woman] to the floor’. When the crew said they were not ‘able to’ Phillip said: ‘Well I am.’ The drainage firm boss then got hold of her and … [Read more...] about Dad restrains woman who stripped on flight and told him about ‘explosion’
Bletsoe memorial hopes for airmen who died in WW2 crash
Published 24 October 2021 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics World War Two A memorial to "formally recognise" nine US servicemen who died and one survivor of a World War Two plane crash is being organised. Mary Laws, 67, who owns the land in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, where the plane came down, said it was to honour their bravery. Members of the 306th Bombardment Group died on a flying mission from Thurleigh Airfield on 26 April 1944. An exhibition about their story is going on show at St Mary's Church . Mrs Laws said she found out about the crash in 1993 when she discovered pieces of aluminium, aeroplane and bullets in her field, and asked local people where they came from. She wanted to do something as "it's very important, especially as they've never been formally recognised after all these years". She said every time she walked … [Read more...] about Bletsoe memorial hopes for airmen who died in WW2 crash
Walrus Freya who became attraction in Norway’s Oslo Fjord put down
Published 23 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A walrus that had become a popular attraction in the Oslo Fjord has been put down out of concern for the safety of the public, Norwegian officials say. The walrus, nicknamed Freya, rose to fame after clambering on to boats to sunbathe - sometimes sinking them. People refused warnings not to get too close to the 1,300lb (600kg) animal, putting her and themselves at risk. On one occasion, police blocked off a bathing area after the walrus chased a woman into the water, local media say. Last week, Norway's fisheries ministry issued a photograph of a large group of people, including children, standing within touching distance of the animal. On Sunday, the director general of fisheries, Frank Bakke-Jensen, said the decision to put the animal down had been based "on an overall assessment of the continued threat … [Read more...] about Walrus Freya who became attraction in Norway’s Oslo Fjord put down
Deportation threat lifted for Bristol men who came to UK as children
Published 13 April Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Two men who grew up in the UK have successfully fought being deported to a country they have few connections with. Anthonell Peccoo and Romaine Murchison met in prison, serving time for offences they say they bitterly regret . By law any foreign national who serves more than a year should be deported, unless a specified exception applies. An immigration tribunal said it would be "cruel and morally wrong" to remove Mr Peccoo, while Mr Murchison found out last week he would be able to stay. Having left Jamaica for Bristol as children, neither has a British passport. In the case of Mr Peccoo, the tribunal said it had taken into account the fact he has no relatives or acquaintances in Jamaica. "For the judge to judge in [my] favour, to just give me a little nod to say you're good - for this country - it was … [Read more...] about Deportation threat lifted for Bristol men who came to UK as children
