For most of the past year Democrats have had to contend with voter dissatisfaction about rising grocery and gas prices, as well as the fact that the president’s party typically loses seats in the first midterm election. But a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist national poll found that if the election were held today, 48 per cent of registered voters said that they would vote for Democrats compared to 41 per cent who would vote for Republicans . There are, of course, reasons this does not automatically signal that Democrats will hold the House of Representatives. For one, that 48 per cent just looks at registered voters, not likely voters. Similarly, what voters think nationally doesn’t take into account how specific congressional districts or states will vote. That means that what candidates choose to emphasise and how they choose to talk about abortion will matter. Some Republicans, like Senate nominee Adam Laxalt, will try to take the issue off the table saying … [Read more...] about Democrats go on the offensive over abortion as Republicans walk tightrope

Pope Francis dismisses resignation and health rumours as ‘court gossip’
Pope Francis has broken his silence on retirement rumours, saying he has no plans to resign in the near future and dismissing rumours about his poor health as “court gossip”. Nevertheless, the pontiff said he would not hesitate to quit if he felt that he was no longer up to the job. “When I see that I can’t do it, OK … I will do it in the great example of Pope Benedict,” he said. Benedict XVI , who is 95, quit in 2013. It was the first papal resignation in nearly 600 years, announced during a meeting with cardinals - the same kind of assembly Francis scheduled for next month. Speculation has been mounting about the future of the Pope’s papacy, fueled by his recent health conditions and his surprise decision to call the meeting of cardinals in late August, a time when the Vatican is usually in holiday mood. Francis also previously announced a visit to L’Aquila, an Italian town linked to Celestine V, a pope who resigned in the late 13th century, leading some to wonder … [Read more...] about Pope Francis dismisses resignation and health rumours as ‘court gossip’
Female doctor unable to book BA flights as ‘title and gender do not match’
British Airways has been forced to apologise over a "glitch" that bars women from using the title doctor when booking flights online. The flag carrier said it was "urgently investigating" issues with its website following a customer complaint. An American traveller, Juliana Kling, posted a picture of BA’s website on Twitter along with the comment: “Apparently ‘Dr’ and ‘woman’ do not match on British Airways. Looking forward to their reply.” A BA spokesman said: "We’re sorry for a technical issue that has occurred in one drop down box on our website and we're urgently investigating." A picture with Ms Kling’s tweet showed an error message on the BA website saying “Title and gender do not match. Please try again” above Dr Kling’s attempt to input her details as a female doctor. The comment prompted hundreds of infuriated replies on social media. British Airways has been beset by IT problems in the past, including a number of IT failures that have caused flights to be … [Read more...] about Female doctor unable to book BA flights as ‘title and gender do not match’
The Republican reaction to Greitens’ gun-toting ‘RINO hunting’ ad matters — a lot
The sleaziest political campaign ads typically come from a candidate’s opponent or an aligned Super PAC. Such ads usually walk a thin tightrope of truth in order to make their target seem less palatable to voters. In contrast, most ads where the candidate appears show them doing mundane tasks, talking about their work or walking somewhere with their family, to underline their supposed relatability. Apparently, Former Missouri Governor Eric Greitens and his campaign team thought that was too boring. So they released a ridiculous and grotesque ad instead, with Greitens toting a shotgun and following a team of heavily armed law enforcement officers into an anonymous home. The purpose? “RINO hunting.” Before they bust into the house, Greitens says, “I’m Eric Greitens, Navy SEAL, and today we’re going RINO hunting.” Then he adds, quietly, as if sneaking up on animal: “The RINO feeds on corruption and is marked by the stripes of cowardice.” After the team busts into the house (and … [Read more...] about The Republican reaction to Greitens’ gun-toting ‘RINO hunting’ ad matters — a lot
We now know the names of Republicans who asked for pardons after January 6. Remember them
On December 27, 2020, there was a call between then-President Trump, Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen, and Acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue. Trump’s pressure was relentless. They had to do more to investigate his voter fraud claims, he urged. Donoghue responded by telling Trump that the Justice Department just can’t snap its fingers and change the results of the election. Trump snapped back, ominously demanding: “Just say that the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the Republican congressmen.” That was an exact quote. Donoghue took notes. Today’s January 6 Committee hearing focused on the former president’s effort to twist the DOJ into his personal coup machine. The committee showed how Trump sought to force the DOJ to aid his multi-level pressure campaign to overturn the 2020 election. And when top officials refused, Trump tried to install someone who would — which culminated in an Oval Office showdown that could have changed the course of … [Read more...] about We now know the names of Republicans who asked for pardons after January 6. Even if you’re pregnant by choice and want your baby, Roe being overturned could destroy your life
“Your pregnancy is not going to work out. If you remain pregnant, you will miscarry. I can’t tell you when it will happen, or to get it removed,” my doctor told me as she looked at her watch. “You have five minutes to decide what to do, as I am going on Thanksgiving vacation and will be out of town so I need to find a doctor to do the surgery.” I sat on the flowery couch in a room adorned with photos of smiling moms and cute babies, tears welling up in my eyes. Getting pregnant had been no easy task. I had prayed for a miracle, thought I had received it — and now my hopes had been shattered, my prayers unanswered and smashed to pieces. For weeks, there had been concerns about my pregnancy. The heartbeat wasn’t strong, so I’d been inserting progesterone pills to help the pregnancy move forward. Now I’d been told it was all for nothing. “Please find a doctor to help me,” I said. But the person I was given a referral for was a “pro-life” doctor. I had no idea until I walked … [Read more...] about Even if you’re pregnant by choice and want your baby, Roe being overturned could destroy your life
