FINDING a partner who's looking to be exclusive, seems head over heels for you and makes grand romantic gestures can feel like hitting the dating jackpot. But your date's over-attentive attitude could be hiding some worrying flaws. Speaking to Cosmo, psychology professor Dr Mariana Bockarova reveals when romance becomes toxic... 1. Crazy in love After a string of bad dating experiences, it can be easy to get swept up in a relationship where your new partner appears to adore you. But if they tell you they love you, or think you're their soul mate, after only a few weeks of dating - it could be time to walk away. "Although not true in all cases, this sort of behaviour is quite common, unfortunately, among controlling, abusive, or narcissistic partners," Dr Bockarova warns. "I would tread carefully with someone making extremely grand gestures before they know you". When dating someone new, remember that long-lasting love takes good communication, trust, reliability and care about one … [Read more...] about The ‘romantic’ gestures which could lead to a toxic relationship… from making grand promises to saying ‘I love you’ too soon
Who should say i love you first
Ask Audrey: ‘Staying in a mobile home is like wearing a t-shirt saying I Love Youghal’
Audrey's been sorting out Cork people for ages...We’re having problems in the bedroom. My husband and I are trying for our first baby at the moment, and just as things are warming up nicely, I get overcome with anxiety that it will be a boy and he won’t get into Pres. My poor husband tries to keep it going with “Christians, Christians, we can try Christians!”, which is an even bigger turn off, because everyone knows they’ve started letting in hurlers. Do you know if it’s possible to get a guarantee from Pres before a child is born (my father is very well connected on the South Mall)? That would be mutual. I checked with my Posh Cousin. She said striving to get your child into a fee-paying school is the kind of thing you’d expect from a Norry, and anyway they have strict enrolment criteria based entirely on merit. I said, what’s she supposed to do so? She said, just turn up at the school gate with your child in a uniform and tell them … [Read more...] about Ask Audrey: ‘Staying in a mobile home is like wearing a t-shirt saying I Love Youghal’
Ask a counsellor: ‘I love my husband – so why am I so attracted to a man at work?’
The problem…“I am happily married and have been for 22 years. I love my husband and certainly don’t want to leave him, he’s a good man and he and our children don’t deserve that, so why am I even thinking about having an affair? A man started working at my company three months ago and I am really attracted to him – so much so that when he talks to me, which is often, I find it hard to concentrate on anything.“He must know how I feel because he invited me out for a drink at lunchtime last week. I went along thinking it was a general office get-together but, when I got there, I realise that we were alone. At that point, I should have made an excuse and gone back to the office, but I didn’t. I stayed, and we had a bit too much to drink.“He was good company and we laughed a lot and, after lunch as we got up to leave, he kissed me on the cheek and asked if I’d like to go out for dinner with him soon.“Here, again, I … [Read more...] about Ask a counsellor: ‘I love my husband – so why am I so attracted to a man at work?’
Carl Sargeant kept saying ‘I just wanted to know’ in his last phone call
Carl Sargeant's former special advisor Sophie Howe told the inquest into his death of the emotional turmoil he had been going through. Mrs Howe, who is now Wales' Future Generations Commissioner, was one of the first to speak to him after he found out he had been suspended from Labour and sacked from the Welsh Government cabinet. She told the hearing in Ruthin he "looked ashen" after finding out the news and told her he hadn’t been told what the allegations against him were. She told Coroner John Gittins: “I find that incredible that he can be sacked without being told what the allegations were.” Mrs Howe first spoke to him on the phone when he rang on the morning of Friday, November 3, to say the allegations of inappropriate touching had been made and that he had been sacked. “He seemed in a terrible state. His voice… I don’t know, he just sounded terrible,” she said. The witness says she picked her friend up and drove him to her house, where … [Read more...] about Carl Sargeant kept saying ‘I just wanted to know’ in his last phone call
Hero cop killed by California gunman had just told his wife ‘I love you’
The police sergeant killed by a gunman who shot dead 12 people at a California nightclub had just told his wife 'I love you' before going to investigate the incident. Father-of-one Sgt Ron Helus, 54, was expected to retire next year after 29 years in law enforcement. Ventura County sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters in Thousand Oaks: "Sgt Helus was having a conversation with his wife, as he does several times during the shift, and said to her 'hey I've got to go and handle a call, I love you.'" Paying tribute to Sgt Helus, the sheriff said: "He died a hero. He went in to save lives, to save other people." Civilians and other deputies pulled Sgt Helus from the bar after he was shot. His colleague Sgt Eric Buschow described him as a "true cop's cop", telling CNN: "He went in there to save lives. He took decisive action, and it's just a tragic loss for us." And he added: "He had just a natural instinct for going after crooks, and he did it with enthusiasm, with a great deal of … [Read more...] about Hero cop killed by California gunman had just told his wife ‘I love you’
