All that glisters is, of course, not gold ... and all that is gold doesn’t necessarily shine, especially “dirty gold”. We wear it, we trade it and – if you’re the sort of person who frequents the restaurants where gold leaf on food is the highest mark of ostentatious opulence – we even eat it. But most of us don’t worry too much about where the gold comes from. Gold mining is considered to be one of the most environmentally unfriendly forms of mineral extraction. The process creates massive amounts of toxic waste – 20 tonnes for every gold ring – and it ravages landscapes such as the Amazon. Plus it’s not the most ethical of industries. For gold miners in developing countries, the wages are low and the risks are high – especially for the estimated 600,000 children working in the industry worldwide. And gold-rich countries are often riven by war, the horrors in the Democratic Republic of Congo being a case in point. But if you’re looking at that ring in the jeweller’s … [Read more...] about Gold stars for fairness

There can be no more vivid example of how dilapidated and dysfunctional the National Health Service is becoming than the news that postmen are to be deployed as makeshift care workers. Royal Mail Health, the branch of the postal service set up to deliver prescription medicine to homes during lockdown , is proposing that its letter carriers act as 'community look-outs'. As well as bringing the post, they will look in on elderly and vulnerable customers, like roaming health visitors and social workers. Is this what social care in the UK has become? It's disgraceful that we should even think of demoting community health to this level, making it a by-product of the postal service. The very idea reveals how badly care services have collapsed. If we have to rely on untrained postal workers to look after our frail and elderly, we have allowed the system to deteriorate to the point where it is no longer fit for purpose. Every hospital doctor knows, of course, that posties … [Read more...] about DR MAX PEMBERTON: Patients need to see GPs, not their postmen
Go on, treat yourself. How often do we say that to ourselves when we're feeling a bit down or dreary? The idea that we can boost our mood or reward ourselves when we're having a difficult time by buying things is, of course, a fallacy. But it's become so accepted that people are even prepared to get into debt to experience the briefest sense of euphoria that comes with a splurge. Naturally, companies know this and are quick to step in and encourage those who might be wavering by offering the opportunity to delay or spread out payments. The past few years have seen an explosion of such firms, especially when it comes to shopping online. But concerns have been raised that, amid the cost of living crisis, people are being tempted to buy things on credit that they can ill afford. One in three shoppers using 'buy now, pay later' services are in 'unmanageable debt', with the average borrower now paying off 4.8 purchases at once, up from 2.6 in February, according to research by … [Read more...] about DR MAX PEMBERTON: Trust me, your retail therapy makes you feel worse
Love is an inexplicable thing, isn’t it? It’s almost impossible to explain it to someone who’s never experienced it. What’s all the more mysterious is the way it changes over time. The feeling of love that, say, a teenager has — that first, giddy, all-consuming feeling that is almost an ache — is quite different to the deep, entwined feeling of love that a couple who have been together for 50 years feels. And the types of love people experience are so varied. Is the love a parent has for their child the same as the love someone has for a pet? Can we lump the feelings of love between friends with the feelings of love between family members? When we talk about love, we are really describing a lot of very complex emotions. Love can be wonderful but also painful, confusing and upsetting. Can we simply explain all this by brain chemistry? Can it really be reduced to a series of hormones surging around in our heads? Dr Anna Machin argues that advances in neuroscience mean … [Read more...] about DR MAX PEMBERTON: Love is a drug… but not one we can prescribe

Todd and Julie Chrisley, stars of the reality show “Chrisley Knows Best” and its spinoffs, were once the picture of the American Dream: A beautiful home, a big family and a thriving business. He married his high school sweetheart, Teresa Terry, and together they had two kids before divorcing in 1996. In the same year his divorce from Terry was finalized, Todd married Julie. The success of the business combined with Todd’s personality and large family made him a perfect candidate for reality TV. Even before the Chrisleys began their reality show in 2014, they had financial problems. In 2012, Todd filed for bankruptcy protection.
