Interest is the cost you pay to borrow money. And though it's just one part of your monthly mortgage payments, it can often amount to significant costs over time and affect how much mortgage you can afford . Understanding how your mortgage interest rate is calculated is a crucial step in securing a home loan. Here's what you need to know about mortgage interest, how it is calculated and how it might impact your finances. Eligible for a mortgage? Check your options at LendingTree Will the Fed's rate hike affect mortgage rates? A day after the Fed's most recent rate hike, mortgage rates increased to 5.78% for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage and 4.81% for 15 years. Freddie Mac said the 30-year rate jump marked "the … [Read more...] about Everything you need to know about mortgage interest rates, including how much you’ll pay

Take Five: Our biggest bank has cut its home loan rate, what’s going on?
Ella Bates-Hermans/Stuff Banks, like any business, want to charge as much as they can. This is what that means for your interest rates. Attention turned to ANZ on Tuesday when it made a surprise move on one of its home loan rates. While we have become used to being told that banks are adjusting their home loan rates up, ANZ’s move was in the opposite direction. It cut its two-year fixed home loan special rate from 5.8% to 5.45%. If you have a loan of $500,000 over 25 years, that’s the equivalent of about $50 a fortnight. Why did this happen? I thought rates were going up? Rates have risen a lot in recent months. The Reserve Bank, like other central banks around the world, is trying to calm inflation by lifting the official cash rate. At the same time, the cost of a lot of offshore funding that New Zealand banks rely on to make loans has also increased. Boy, 13, and aunt, 33, die in grain silo after she jumped in to save him
A teenage boy and his aunt have died after falling into a grain silo on a farm in South Africa. Kerneels Rautenbach, 13, was playing with a friend at Groenvlei Farm near Standerton, an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, when he fell into the vat on Friday. His 33-year-old aunt, Jackie Rautenbach, ran over after hearing the friend crying for help. She is believed to have slipped and fallen in while trying to pull Kerneels from the grain. Her husband was reportedly a few feet away at the time but was also unable to save her. Several farmers from the surrounding area are said to have ‘worked tirelessly’ scooping out the maize from the silo, but reached the pair too late. Paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene. Kerneels’ mum wrote on Facebook: ‘My child, may the angels surround you with love and listen to all your stories, make them laugh and show all your tricks. May you play cricket and play rugby and you tackle all the guys. ‘You were extremely precious, you … [Read more...] about Boy, 13, and aunt, 33, die in grain silo after she jumped in to save him
Warning to millions of people on Universal Credit as £650 cost of living payment WON’T hit bank accounts in one go
MILLIONS of people on Universal Credit won't get the £650 cost of living payment all at once. Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the extra cash would be dished out as part of a £15billion emergency package for low income households. More than eight million households will receive the help, which will be paid in two instalments. The first instalment is worth £326 and will land in bank accounts from 14 July - payments will be staggered from there. But the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) say applicants may not receive money at the same time. The DWP say it's because there are millions of payments that need to go out and they can't all be processed on a single day. Anti-Meghan and Harry twitter accounts mistakenly trolled Sussex NHS trust
Anti- Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Twitter -users appear to have mistakenly trolled mental health hospitals located in the area that gives the couple their royal titles, Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Tweets targeted Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, an organisational unit within Britain's National Health Service in the county of Sussex. It has nothing to do with the couple's titles. Some tweets targeted a post about the organization's partnership with mental health texting service Shout, which is backed by Prince William and Kate Middleton . The negative comments tagged Shout's official Twitter account as well as the Sussex Partnership one. One comment on July 4 read: "Anything to do with them two lying scabs from America then it gets blocked now. Corruption attached to all Meghan Markle touches." Another replied with a critical blog post about Meghan and Harry only to be told they were not linked to Sussex Partnership. The account replied: "Yes, I see that … [Read more...] about Anti-Meghan and Harry twitter accounts mistakenly trolled Sussex NHS trust
How special F1 engineering saved Zhou Guanyu’s life in British Grand Prix crash at Silverstone
Silverstone delivered one of the most exciting grands prix in years, with Carlos Sainz taking his first career win and five drivers scrapping for the runner-up spot in the closing laps. It was a sell-out show with celebs including Tom Cruise getting in on the action. But, among a ton of interesting storylines – not least a dip in fortunes for championship leader Max Verstappen and a popular return to the podium for home hero Lewis Hamilton – all memories will be fixed on Zhou Guanyu’s horror crash. It took 53 minutes for the race to be restarted after he, George Russell and Alexander Albon had their races ended before the first turn. The No.24 Alfa Romeo was clipped by Russell, and sent flying down the track upside down before it flipped over the top of the tyre barrier. The roll hoop was destroyed but the Halo cockpit protection did its job. It is the fourth time the device, introduced in 2018, has saved an F1 driver from serious injury. Confirmation that the … [Read more...] about How special F1 engineering saved Zhou Guanyu’s life in British Grand Prix crash at Silverstone

Defence, technology and transport budgets are all set to be trimmed, according to Russian media. More than 1.6 trillion roubles, or £24bn, has been slashed from the Russian state budget over the next three years as Moscow braces for a two-year recession. Spending will be 557bn roubles (£8.2bn) lower in 2023 than previously approved plans, with similar cuts pencilled in for the following two years. The budget tweaks are minor compared to the size of Moscow’s overall budget but the figures are one of the first signs of the fiscal blow being dealt by the conflict in Ukraine.
