President Donald Trump on Friday picked budget director Mick Mulvaney to be his next chief of staff, ending a chaotic search that had been inching forward with the feel of an unfolding reality TV show. Trump tweeted that Mr Mulvaney "will be named Acting White House Chief of Staff, replacing General John Kelly, who has served our Country with distinction." "Mick has done an outstanding job while in the Administration," Trump posted. "I look forward to working with him in this new capacity as we continue to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! John will be staying until the end of the year. He is a GREAT PATRIOT and I want to personally thank him for his service!" Though deemed an "acting" chief of staff, Mr Mulvaney’s term will be open-ended, according to a senior White House official speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss personnel matters. The position does not require confirmation. Mr Mulvaney, who will be Mr Trump’s third chief of staff, will now take on his third job … [Read more...] about Donald Trump names Mick Mulvaney as next chief of staff
Donald Trump ordered hush money payments to two women who claim they had affairs with him and knew it was wrong, his former lawyer claims. Michael Cohen, 52, said the US president acted because he “was very concerned about how this would affect the election”. It comes after the billionaire’s former “fixer” was sentenced this week to three years’ jail for his part in the deals. He said money was paid to porn star Stormy Daniels and ex-Playboy model Karen McDougal. Both claim they had affairs with Trump in 2006. After Mr Cohen was sentenced in New York on Wednesday, Trump insisted he never ordered his former attorney to break the law. But asked yesterday if the president knew the payments were wrong, Mr Cohen said: “Of course.” The lawyer told US TV: “Nothing at the Trump Organisation was ever done unless it was run through Mr Trump. "He directed me to make the payments.” Mr Cohen said it was to “help [Trump] and his … [Read more...] about Michael Cohen says Donald Trump ‘ordered him to pay hush money to two ex-lovers’

Mr Trump tweeted on Friday that Mr Mulvaney “has done an outstanding job” in his administration and would take over next year. Mr Trump deemed Mr Mulvaney his “acting chief of staff” but it was not immediately clear what that meant for the length of his tenure. He will replace John Kelly. Mr Trump praised Mr Kelly’s service and called him a “great patriot” in the tweet. Mr Trump announced last week that Mr Kelly, who served in the post for more than a year, would soon be departing. The president’s first choice was Nick Ayers, the vice president’s chief of staff, who bowed out after being unable to come to an agreement on how long he would serve in the post. Journalist and … [Read more...] about Who has Donald Trump named as his next White House chief of staff?
Michael Cohen has claimed his former boss Donald Trump was aware that giving hush money to two women claiming affairs during the 2016 election campaign was “wrong” but directed him to make the payments anyway. Mr Cohen, Mr Trump’s former lawyer jailed for three years for crimes including breaking campaign finance laws over the payments, said the US president is lying when he says he did not order the move. The allegation is significant as Mr Trump, who denies ordering the payments, is arguing that the behaviour does not amount to a crime. He has insisted the money paid was not a campaign contribution and therefore broke no laws. The row has potentially significant legal and political consequences. Mr Trump stands accused in court of ordering illegal campaign payments – though any move to prosecute is unlikely to happen while he is in office. It centres on two payments made in the run-up to the 2016 presidential vote to porn star Stormy … [Read more...] about Michael Cohen says Donald Trump directed hush money payments and knew they were ‘wrong’
