Rishi Sunak says Boris Johnson has been ignoring his calls since he quit Cabinet

August 12, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Boris Johnson has been ignoring Rishi Sunak's calls since he resigned from Cabinet, the former Chancellor said last night. The Tory leadership contender admitted it was "unsurprising" after he sparked the PM's downfall - leading Johnson ally Nadine Dorries to brand him a back-stabber. Mr Sunak was one of the first ministers to abandon their post in early July, alongside former Health Secretary Sajid Javid . Both wrote incendiary resignation letters which led more than 50 frontbenchers to quit until Mr Johnson was forced to resign. Mr Sunak told a hustings last night: "I've messaged and called, but unsurprisingly he hasn't returned my calls." Boris Johnson is widely known to be backing Liz Truss in the Tory leadership contest but has not formally swung behind a candidate. More info This afternoon Boris Johnson fulfilled his lifelong ambition of becoming Prime Minister, following in the footsteps of his hero Sir Winston Churchill. In fact, the new PM recently penned a book on his World World II predecessor called The Churchill Factor. But while Boris may see himself as something of a 21st century Churchill dealing with this generation’s crisis, an actor who recently played the great man claims he wouldn’t have had much time for someone like the new prime minister. A couple of years ago Brian Cox starred in Churchill and claimed that Boris lacked the gumption to be like the legendary world leader. … [Read more...] about Churchill ‘would NOT like opportunist Boris Johnson, he lacks gumption’ says WW2 PM actor

Rishi says Boris has been ignoring all his calls since resigning from cabinet

August 12, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Rishi Sunak – the underdog wanting to take over from Boris Johnson – has revealed relations between the two haven’t been too rosy since he resigned from the cabinet. The former chancellor says Mr Johnson now refuses to take his calls each time he phones him. He took part in a hustings hosted by the Daily Telegraph last night alongside arch rival Liz Truss , who he is battling to become the leader of the Conservative Party . Camilla Tominey, the paper’s associate editor, asked whether Rishi had spoken with Boris since resigning from his post. He revealed: ‘I’ve messaged and called, but unsurprisingly he hasn’t returned my calls.’ Mr Sunak caused quite the controversy when he resigned from cabinet, with critics like Nadine Dorries accusing him of being a backstabber. Alongside former health secretary Sajid Javid, Mr Sunak wrote a scathing resignation letter in July saying he no longer had faith in the Prime Minister because of the Chris Pincher scandal . … [Read more...] about Rishi says Boris has been ignoring all his calls since resigning from cabinet

No relief for hard-hit families as fat cat energy bosses and No 10 fail to find solution at crisis summit

August 11, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

HARD-UP families suffered another blow today as fat cat energy bosses and the government failed to find a solution to soaring electricity prices. With energy bills predicted to hit a staggering £5,000 next year, a roundtable discussion between industry and the government was held at No10. Boris Johnson, Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng were all present. Together they urged energy bosses to "act in the interest of the country" as prices rocket, in part because of the war in Ukraine. But no major policy decisions, such as a second windfall tax, were made. Despite calls for immediate action, the PM repeated his view that any further interventions will be up to his replacement. Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak agree that it should be for one of them to decide what happens next. Norway threatens to ration electricity in fresh blow for UK and European energy supplies

August 8, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

N orway has drawn up plans to ration electricity exports in a move that has heightened fears of energy shortages in the UK and Europe this winter. The government in Oslo on Monday announced new rules limiting the sale of power to foreign countries as heatwaves threaten Norway’s hydroelectric power generation. Experts said the restrictions threatened the UK’s plan to draw power from Norway this winter via the North Sea Link - leaving electricity supplies more stretched and risking even higher bills for consumers. The National Grid has already revealed that the UK is set to be more dependent than ever on the Continent for power, with interconnectors expected to provide up to 5.7 gigawatts of electricity at peak times. About one quarter of that total – or 1.4 gigawatts – is set to come from Norway. Kathryn Porter, an energy consultant at Watt-Logic, said the proposed restrictions “put at risk the ability of Britain to import from Norway this winter”. “National Grid ESO needs to … [Read more...] about Norway threatens to ration electricity in fresh blow for UK and European energy supplies

Labour to reveal ‘comprehensive’ cost of living plan on Monday as they pledge to scrap ‘outrageous’ prepayment energy meter costs

August 12, 2022 by news.sky.com

Sir Keir Starmer will lay out his party's "comprehensive plan" to deal with the costs of living crisis - including rising energy bills - on Monday. Labour on Thursday vowed to stop the "outrageous" premiums that energy prepayment meter customers face. It comes as Boris Johnson doubled down on his insistence that it is for his successor to "make significant fiscal decisions" after talks with energy bosses ended with no new measures to ease the cost of living crisis . Speaking on Friday, Sir Keir said he would outline his new policy proposal in more detail next week. "We do need a strategic, a credible, plan and that's exactly what's missing from this government," he said. Advertisement He added: "On Monday I'm going to be setting out a comprehensive set of proposals, a plan for how we handle the upcoming costs in the autumn, while what you've had from the Conservative Party is two leadership candidates arguing with each other about just how … [Read more...] about Labour to reveal ‘comprehensive’ cost of living plan on Monday as they pledge to scrap ‘outrageous’ prepayment energy meter costs
