SEATTLE – Knowing Robinson Cano will be back soon, Ryon Healy wants to show he deserves to keep Seattle’s first base job. Healy hit a pair of three-run homers for a career-best six RBIs, lifting the Mariners over the White Sox, 8-2, Sunday. “I want to help this team win every single day whether I’m in the lineup or not,” Healy said. “And I’m going to find a way to do that. When Cano comes back or whatever, I don’t care.” Cano is eligible to return in mid-August from an 80-game suspension for a positive drug test. Seattle acquired second baseman Dee Gordon in Cano’s absence, and Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said last week that Cano will play every day when he returns, mostly at first. “Things like that are out of my control,” Healy said. “I’m not a guy who needs to try harder. I think I try too hard at times. It isn’t the first time this has happened to me or anyone else in this … [Read more...] about Seattle Mariners defeat White Sox behind Ryon Healy’s pair of 3-run homers

White Sox ‘put it all together’ in rout of Kansas City
You can say the White Sox played a Grade-A game Sunday afternoon, beating the Kansas City Royals, 10-1, at Guaranteed Rate Field. But as the Sox head into the All-Star break with the third-worst record (33-62) in the major leagues, manager Rick Renteria was accurate when he gave the team an overall D grade for the first half of the season. “There are things we continue to need to improve upon,” Renteria said. “That goes without saying. I’d say effort level is probably a B-plus or an A. That would be fair to say. I also believe it would be fair to say we will continue to try to improve on all the aspects of the game we need to improve on, fundamentally speaking.” Give the White Sox an A for their all-around performance in Sunday’s victory. “Today was one of those days where we put it all together,” starting pitcher Lucas Giolito said. “I’m looking forward to more of those.” After surviving another rocky first inning that … [Read more...] about White Sox ‘put it all together’ in rout of Kansas City
Fowler’s grand slam leads Cards to rout of White Sox
CHICAGO – Dexter Fowler broke out of his funk in grand style. The slumping outfielder hit his fourth career grand slam, All-Star Miles Mikolas tossed six innings of three-hit ball and the St. Louis Cardinals routed the Chicago White Sox 14-2 on Tuesday night. Kolten Wong had four hits, including a two-run homer and a double, as every St. Louis starter except catcher Yadier Molina got at least one hit. Jose Martinez had three hits and two RBIs. "(Fowler) has been working to get that feel, so that's something to build on," manager Mike Matheny said. "Just some big days all around. A big day for Kolten, getting four hits and the ball jumping for him, too." Fowler lofted his sixth homer this season, but first since May 6, to cap the Cardinals' seven-run sixth. He finished with two hits and played right field in only his second start since June 27. Fowler entered batting just .167 – and .111 in his previous 20 games. "It's awesome, especially when you've been scuffling at the … [Read more...] about Fowler’s grand slam leads Cards to rout of White Sox
3 Cubs on NL All-Star roster; White Sox’s Abreu starting for AL
Mike Trout, Aaron Judge and Mookie Betts form a dream outfield for the American League. Bryce Harper and Max Scherzer make up a not-so-gracious welcome committee for the NL. Power in the center of power. A capital-sized All-Star Game. Baseball unveiled the rosters for its midsummer showcase Sunday night, featuring an imposing AL lineup and Harper starting at his home ballpark in Washington. Reigning AL MVP Jose Altuve was one of five All-Stars from the World Series champion Houston Astros, matching the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians for most in the majors. The New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves each had four, including rookie Gleyber Torres from the Bronx Bombers and fellow second baseman Ozzie Albies from the surprising Braves. "It's fun. You're playing but you're looking around because you're playing with all those big boys out there," said Altuve, who made the AL team for the sixth time. Torres is on the disabled list with a hip injury and unlikely to participate. While he … [Read more...] about 3 Cubs on NL All-Star roster; White Sox’s Abreu starting for AL
White Sox squander late lead, lose to Reds in Cincinnati
CINCINNATI – All the Reds needed was one misstep by the White Sox to pull out another comeback win, with Alex Blandino delivering the final hit. Blandino’s two-run double in the eighth inning completed Cincinnati’s four-run rally for a 5-3 victory Monday night. The Sox returned to Great American Ball Park for the first time since 2009 and let one slip away with the help of a misplay that changed everything. “If we secure one out either way ... “ Sox manager Rick Renteria said. The Reds loaded the bases with one out against Chris Volstad (1-5). Adam Duvall grounded to first baseman Matt Davidson, who was indecisive and wound up failing to get an out. Davidson intended to step on first and then throw home. He took several steps toward the base and changed his plan, throwing to the plate without stepping on first – too late to get Scooter Gennett sprinting in to score. “I kind of just rushed myself and made a mistake and didn’t touch the … [Read more...] about White Sox squander late lead, lose to Reds in Cincinnati
