T he American owners of Boots may revive plans for stock market float next year after scrapping the sale of Britain’s biggest chemist to a Wall Street buyout fund and Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani. Walgreens, which merged with Boots in 2014 in a deal worth £9bn, said none of the offers for the “adequately reflects the high potential value of Boots and No7 Beauty Company”. The Illinois-headquartered company said bidders had struggled to arrange bank loans to buy Boots after financial markets “suffered unexpected and dramatic change”. Private equity fund Apollo and Mr Ambani had been in pole position to acquire Boots after Walgreens chairman Stefano Pessina put the business up for sale in January. But a £5bn approach — considerably lower than the £7bn Mr Pessina is said to have wanted — fell through. Ornella Barra, Boots operating chief, wrote to the company’s 56,000 staff saying she was “happy to confirm that it has been decided that Boots and No7 Beauty Company will … [Read more...] about Boots stock market float back on the table as £5bn sale collapses

Train operators hit back at RMT assault on ‘fat cat rail bosses’
Train operators have hit back at Mick Lynch's assault on "fat cat rail bosses", saying that profits are little more than a third of the £500 million claimed by the head of the striking rail union. Bosses claim that union figures were not based on reality. They cited figures prepared by the regulator that showed that average annual profits shared among 20 operators over the last six years are £188 million - and as low as £22 million in the year to March 2020. The intervention came after three days of strike action that paralysed the entire transport network. The RMT will now decide whether to call more strikes after talks with rail chiefs broke down. Although the government is poised for more action, it is reassured by the fact that the damage to the economy is less acute than in previous strikes. Writing in The Telegraph, Grant Shapps said that rail strikes no longer have the power to paralyse the nation because people are increasingly able to work from home. “The days when … [Read more...] about Train operators hit back at RMT assault on ‘fat cat rail bosses’
As floods intensify, governments consider managed retreat
People have been pushing back the boundary of the sea for centuries. Whether by building dikes in the Netherlands or creating artificial islands with soil and debris in places such as Hong Kong and Dubai, it once seemed as if nothing could stand in the way of our expanding landmass. But, with rising sea levels and disastrous flooding becoming ever more common, some communities are beginning to consider the opposite approach to counter the effects of climate change: managed retreat. Lagos, Nigeria's largest city, lies only a couple meters above sea level, making it particularly vulnerable to rising seas This could include moving from big cities. In Sydney, Australia, the latest extreme torrential rain has caused dams to overflow and rivers to break their banks, forcing more than 30,000 residents to evacuate. Areas north and south of the city were deluged with 1.5 meters (59 inches) of rain in 24 hours, which is close to the average rainfall for a year in coastal areas of … [Read more...] about As floods intensify, governments consider managed retreat

DR MAX PEMBERTON: Trust me, your retail therapy makes you feel worse
Go on, treat yourself. How often do we say that to ourselves when we're feeling a bit down or dreary? The idea that we can boost our mood or reward ourselves when we're having a difficult time by buying things is, of course, a fallacy. But it's become so accepted that people are even prepared to get into debt to experience the briefest sense of euphoria that comes with a splurge. Naturally, companies know this and are quick to step in and encourage those who might be wavering by offering the opportunity to delay or spread out payments. The past few years have seen an explosion of such firms, especially when it comes to shopping online. But concerns have been raised that, amid the cost of living crisis, people are being tempted to buy things on credit that they can ill afford. One in three shoppers using 'buy now, pay later' services are in 'unmanageable debt', with the average borrower now paying off 4.8 purchases at once, up from 2.6 in February, according to research by … [Read more...] about DR MAX PEMBERTON: Trust me, your retail therapy makes you feel worse

As global temperatures continue to rise, corals around the world are being subject to more stress, with many bleaching in response.
